Entertainment stage features sounds of three area bands There will be varied free entertainment for three nights at this year’s Carroll County fair at the Entertainment Stage located at the south end of the fairgrounds. Providing concerts all beginning at 7 p.m. will be the Little Rock Band on Thursday evening, Wild Oats Band Friday night and the Stark County Fair Band Saturday evening. Little Rock Band The husband-wife team of Little Rock Band was formed by Gary and Debbie Parker in 1996. They have been performing as full time musicians ever since. Little Rock’s main venues have been in private organizations such as the Veterans’ Clubs, Moose Lodges and Eagles’ Clubs. “The summer schedule is also packed full with fairs, festivals, campgrounds and private parties,” the Parkers said. Their variety of music includes classic rock, classic country, modern country, oldies and originals. “Some time during a performance you will be singing along, no matter what type of music you like,” the Parkers commented. Gary plays acoustic and electric guitar and Debbie adds her touch by playing the piano/keyboard live. Her strongest quality is her sweet and pure, yet very powerful voice for the duo vocals. Wild Oats Band The three-piece Wild Oats classic rock and classic country band has been together for over a decade. Members are called the “been there done that” band because everyone in the band is over 46 years old – “and by that time in your life you have usually been there and done that,” according to the band’s promotional material. Members include David Fernandez, who has been playing drums since the age of six; Wes Capes, a bass player since 1998 and also the band’s DJ and

Stark County Fair Band Under the direction of Ted Wenger, the 25-piece Stark County Fair band will perform a variety of marches, polkas, show tunes, patriotic numbers and a couple classic selections on each of their two 45minute concerts. Among the selections to be performed at the Saturday evening concerts are the Stars and Stripes Forever and the Carrollton March, written by Karl King of Canton and dedicated to his Carrollton friend Ira Moody, who directed the former Carrollton band. The band’s membership includes Don Rutledge who plays trumpet. The Entertainment Stage is located on the grassy strip at the lower (south end) of the fairgrounds where seating is available for lawn chairs and blankets.

GET TO KNOW.....

Fairboard member Dave Seck What is your favorite animal? I can’t really say I have one favorite animal but I am partial to dogs because Ashli shows dogs.

Dave Seck has been married to wife, Vikki, for 24 years. They have a daughter, Ashli, 14. Town of Residence: Carrollton. How long have you been involved with the Senior Fair Board? 15 years.

Do you have another job or occupation? Please describe. I am the road superintendent for Center Township.

Who or what encouraged you to become involved? Some of the board members at that time approached me and asked if I would be interested in running for a position. I also wanted to donate my time to an important organization in our community and county.

How much time do you spend in your volunteer position? During the winter months, I store vehicles for people and the board makes decisions for the entertainment for the fair. When spring arrives, it involves getting the fairgrounds ready and preparing for the fair.

What are your duties on the fair board and during the fair? I am responsible for the gates and the ride booths during the fair. The rest of the year, I am responsible for off-season storage.

In my spare time, I enjoy... Attending tractor pulls, camping and riding ATVs. What is your favorite food? Fair food.

What is the funniest thing that has happened to you while serving on the Sr. Fair Board? The year we had monster trucks they involved a few board members and brought out mini monster trucks and had the board members race them. People would be surprised to know... I worked as a stuntman for Brian Carson who did stunts for movies like “Smokey and the Bandit.”

AT RIGHT: Dave Seck, who will spend the next couple weeks sorting, collecting, organizing tickets and distributing them to gates during the Carroll County Fair, is shown behind his desk in the Fair Secretary’s Office ready to get to work.

4-H has established a foundation for Jennifer Barnhart to build upon You could say Jennifer Barnhart is a “Sharp Shooter” from “A to Z.” Barnhart, 19, is long-time member of A to Z 4-H Club and Sharp Shooters 4H Club, part of the Carroll County 4-H program. The daughter of Christine and Edward H. Barnhart, Jr. of Scio, she is a 2013 graduate of Carrollton High School and Buckeye Career Center (BCC). She plans to attend Hocking Technical College in Hocking Hills in the fall and major in Ecotourism and Archeology. “Being involved in 4-H has taught me skills I can use in the future,” said Barnhart. “I want to work on archeological dig sites and have learned how to plan ahead and use rational thinking skills learned through 4-H about having to be responsible.” Jennifer cannot remember a time she or one of her siblings has not been involved in 4-H. She watched as her five older siblings, Edward III, Joseph, Marie, David and Amanda, showed sheep, chickens and goats. Jennifer joined The A to Z 4-H Club when she was eligible and shows market goats and chickens and fancy chickens. Last year she won senior showmanship with her chicken. Jennifer helps her younger siblings, Sarah, 17, James, 13, John, 11 and Brian, 9, learn the “tricks of the trade” to show their animals and clip them. “As for training their animals,” she said, “everyone has to train their own.” She and her younger siblings are also members of Sharp Shooters 4-H Club. Jennifer has taken shotgun, rifle, and pistol projects. This year she is taking archery. “I joined Sharp Shooters because I like the fact that I know how to use a firearm properly to defend myself. I think it is something everyone should learn.” She has competed twice at the Ohio State Fair with rifle projects and once with a finance project. Barnhart is serving her fourth year as a member of the Carroll County Junior Fair Board, helping with junior fair activities during the fair. During her years in 4-H, she has held numerous offices more than once, including president, vice-president, secretary, and health and safety officer. Jennifer was home-schooled until her junior year of high school when she

entered the Natural Resources program at BCC. She had an ancient history class in seventh grade and did a paper on Ancient Egypt. She said researching and learning for the paper had an effect on her; she fell in love with history and knew she wanted to work on dig sites. She also loves the outdoors. In the Natural Resources program, she has learned about wildlife, water sampling, aqua culture; anything to do with the outside, she said. She became an active member in the BCC Future Farmers of America (FFA) Chapter and displayed a chainsaw project last year at the Tuscarawas County Fair. “We learned how to use a chainsaw our junior year and was told we would have to do a project our senior year,” she explained. “I did a chainsaw carving of a cross which stands about three feet tall.” Using a regular size chainsaw, Jennifer said the project was rough cut and took about 6-7 hours to complete. She learned the proper way to hold a chainsaw and said, while arm strength is important, carving is not all done with the arms, you use your entire skeleton. Through Natural Resources and BCC FFA, she competed in a Forestry and Wildlife and Nature Interpretation contest in Columbus. She was tested on forestry knowledge such as measuring trees, parts of the chainsaw and other forestry equipment. The wildlife competition involved fish, game, animals and the outdoors. The nature interpretation tested her knowledge on plants and non-game animals, such as songbirds. She competed at the state level placing fourth in nature interpretation and earned a chance to qualify for national competition. As Jennifer reflected on her final year in 4-H, she stated, “I’ve liked what I have gotten to do in 4-H. It has been fun. I would like to see it get bigger like it was in previous years, get more kids involved. I want to thank Rex Energy, Chesapeake and other businesses for participating in our fair. We really appreciate it.” Barnhart lives on Rose Hill Farm, a 14-acre farm where her family raises goats, dairy beef feeders and chickens. She is employed at Peacock Cleaners in Carrollton.

Pony pulling returns to fair lineup A pony pull has been added to the Tuesday evening lineup at the Carroll County Fair. For the past several years, a horse pull has been held Tuesday (July 16) in front of the grandstand. With the popularity of pony pulls increasing in the area, Ag Society members agreed to add ponies to the lineup. The pony pull will follow the Central Ohio Pony Pullers rules and classes. Weigh-in for both pulls begins at 5

p.m. Ponies will begin pulling at 6 p.m. The draft horse pulls begins after the pony pull, at approximatealy 7 p.m. The horse pull will be divided into light and heavyweight divisions. Light weight teams must weight 3,300 lbs. or under. Heavyweight teams are 3,301 lbs. and over. Entry fee for the horse pull is $25 per team. The is no admission fee for the grandstand.

GET TO KNOW....

New Fairboard member Mark Edie Mark Edie is the newest member of the fairboard. He is helping Dan King with concessions and will eventually take over as concession manager due to King’s work schedule. Edie grew up on a farm in Perrysville and is a 2005 graduate of Carrollton High School. He attended the Lineman’s Course at Buckeye Career Center after graduation. Name: Mark Edie. Family: Wife, Ashley (Scott). Town of Residence: Perrysville How long have you been involved with the Senior Fair Board? This is my first year on the fairboard. I was elected to the Perry Twp. seat last October. Who or what encouraged you to become involved? I decided to run for the position as another hobby. What are your duties on the fair board and during the fair? I will be taking over as concession manager. I keep in contact with food vendors, checking emails, sending and receiving contracts. We will mark out the locations for the concession booths for the fair in the next week. Do you have another job or occupation? I work for American Electric Power (AEP) in New Philadelphia as a lineman. How much time do you spend in

your volunteer position? During the off season, I am in the office about once a week. Once we get close to fair, we start working here every other Saturday and gradually increase that time. What is your favorite part of the fair? I am looking forward to the tractor pulls.

WELCOME Welcome rd to To the 1 6 3 The 156th CARROLL

Carroll County Fair COUNTY FAIR

In my spare time, I enjoy...hunting. What is your favorite food? Pizza. Did you participate in 4-H or FFA as a youth and, if so, what projects did you take? I was in both 4-H and FFA and showed hogs at the fair. What is the funniest thing that has happened to you while serving on the Sr. Fair Board? I haven’t been on the senior fairboard very long. When I was in 4-H, my dad (Ron Edie) was a member of the fairboard and in charge of parking. It was almost time for me to go into the show ring with my hog and in a hurry, I slid into the golf cart and ripped my pants. I didn’t have time to change and had to go into the ring with ripped pants. People would be surprised to know... At my first fairboard meeting, members were asked who would like to go to convention and represent Carroll County. Kevin (Host) was supposed to go with me but was unable to attend convention so during the first year and my first convention, I went by myself.

Carroll County Sheriff Dale Williams The Carroll County Sheriff’s Office will be here to provide security and any other assistance you may need during your visit. Feel free to stop by our headquarters located at the south end of the midway or call us Fairboard member Mark Edie (shown above) is learning the ins and outs of the concession manager’s position on the fairboard and will take over that position from Dan King.

Fair demo derby includes class for kids and power wheels On Saturday, September 30, 1967, the Carroll County Fair held its first Demolition Derby. The Derby was the closing event and fair goers filled the grandstand. The event didn’t begin until much later in the evening, around 9:30. It had to wait on the conclusion of the Conotton Valley/Flushing High School football game which at the time was part of the fair entertainment. A hit from the start, the derby has become the most popular and closing event of the annual fair. Over the years, the Derby has grown from just cars, to trucks, garden tractors and a youth class that allows kids between the ages of 12 and 16 to drive with an adult in the car with them. This year will be no different. A Power Wheel class has been added and will be the opening feature. “The fair is all about the kids, so we have added a Power Wheels feature for the kids as a way of getting them interested,” said Brian Shuman, owner of Mangled

Metal Productions, who has run the event for the past five years. “We plan on starting the Power Wheels as soon as we can following the Combine Derby because of the length of time it takes.” For some, running in derbies is just a way of life. “I have no choice, I was born into it,” said Andy Larkins of Waynesburg, who is following in his fathers’ footsteps as a derby driver. “I was born to derby,” For others, it’s the adrenaline rush. “When I get out there and the adrenaline starts I just want to drive right through people,” said Johnathan Pitts of Minerva. Featured classes will be Power Wheels, Garden Tractors, Youth, Powder Puff, Adult compact, Mild weld 80’s and newer and a Pro Model Class. The Derby will get underway Sunday night at 6 p.m. Grandstanding seating is $3 and track seating $5. It will be preceded by the very popular combine derby at 2 p.m.

Jr. Fairboard members keep the shows moving along By Carol McIntire Editor The smooth operation of any county fair program involves cooperation and leadership. The Carroll County Jr. Fair program is no exception. The 18-member Jr. Fairboard and its advisor, Wes Frew, are faced with the task of running shows, operating the Jr. Fair office and even putting on a show of their own. Frew, who has been the advisor since 2010, takes his job seriously as do the members of the board. “These kids show a great deal of responsibility and leadership in their positions,” Frew noted. “They are responsible for manning the Jr. Fair office, (making copies, answering the phone, filling out stall cards, filing forms, running errands and organizing awards), announcing and handing out ribbons during shows as well as keeping the master list for placings in the classes, put on the Pee Wee Showmanship contest and give a tour of the Jr. Fair facilities to Cloverbud members.” Frew said he also tries to take as many Jr. Fairboard members as possible to the Fair Managers Conference in Columbus, which is held in January. “They have a Jr. Fair Day on Saturday which is a great opportunity for the kids to network, meet Jr. Fairboard members from other counties and learn about the workings of the fair,” Frew noted. Any member of one of the organizations represented in the Jr. Fair (4-H, FFA, Boy

Ed Trushel (left) and Mike Rossey of Diamond T Fencing, prepare to set a post as part of the new tie stall system being installed in the steer section of the metal barn. The Carrollton Farmer’s Exchange donated 20 posts to the project.

Scouts and Girl Scouts) who is 14 years of age by Jan. 1 of the year they apply, is eligible to submit an application. Membership is a selective process done by interviews. “We have instituted a point system where the members earn points throughout the year by completing activities during the fair as well as during the off-season. If the member meets a specific point level, they can remain a member until they are no longer eligible for Jr. Fair.” Members are required to work five two-hour shifts in the office as well as a Jr. Fair livestock show. The members themselves are dedicated to their jobs and excited about the opportunities it brings to them. Carrollton FFA President Liz Bormuth is a second year member of the Jr. Fairboard. She applied because she wanted to a make a difference. “I always enjoyed the fair,” she said. “I want to have a career in public relations and felt this was an opportunity for me to become involved in my community.” She has shown horses, dairy beef feeders, rabbits and lambs at the county fair. “When I was younger, I would see the Jr. Fairboard members running the different shows and thought, ‘wow, that is something I want to do’.” She says being a Jr. Fairboard member allows her to move outside her comfort zone and try new things. “I’ve helped at the horse and chicken shows which was a familiar setting,” she commented. “Then I had to do swine showmanship which was something I was familiar with. I accidentally mispronounced a kid’s name wrong and felt awful. It was a learning experience.” Brittany Rohr, a member of both 4H and FFA, laughs when she says she was destined to be on the Jr. Fairboard. “My mom was a member of the Jr. Fairboard and she encouraged me to apply,” Rohr said. “She always tells me to give 110 percent.” Rohr, a 2013 graduate plans to be an agriculture educator and feels this opportunity “fits right in” with her plans. She has shown dairy cows and heifers, steers, dairy beef feeders, pigs, carcass goats and carcass hogs during her Jr. Fair career. She has also participated in the still project area. She is a member of the Carrollton FFA chapter and East Township Young Producers and is looking forward to spending her fourth year as a Jr. Fairboard member at the county fair. Tanner Kaufman, a 2013 graduate of Minerva High School and member of Brown Frame Roundup 4-H Club, is a fifth year member of the Jr. Fairboard. Although most of his 4-H career has centered around still and woodworking projects, he was drawn to the

group because of what it offered. He has also shown rabbits a couple years. “I knew the members worked shows and it seemed like a pretty important job. I knew you had to be a responsible person to be a member. I decided to apply.” Kauffman is a member of the Cloverbud Committee, who provides all 4-H Cloverbud members with an opportunity to witness life in the Jr. Fair barns one day during the fair. “It really is a lot of fun,” he said. “Making the adjustment from still projects to running large and small animal shows wasn’t that difficult.” He is concluding his 10-year 4-H career and plans to study civil engineering at Stark State College this fall. Other members of the Jr. Fairboard include: Jennifer Barnhart, Sarah Barnhart, Eliza Days, Jaycee Flanagan, Chelsea Frase, Dustie Kubankin, Cheyenne Morsheiser, Natalie Romeo, Lauren Rutledge, Travis Rutledge, Josie Snair, Brandie Jo Tinlin, Dalton Ulman, Annabel Vernier and Zach Wilson. While talking about the Jr. Fairboard, Frew noted participation in just about all the Jr. Fair livestock projects is up over last year. “Chickens, turkeys, goats and lambs are all up,” he noted. He said work continues to complete the Rosebud Livestock Complex, which was constructed late last spring and used at the county fair for lambs and hogs last year. This year, Frew said major construction is taking place outside the building as drains and downspouts are being installed and connected

and the roadway beside the building is being improved by the county highway department. New large fans are being installed, thanks to a grant from the Ashton Preservation Fund and 40 hog pens are being purchased. The remaining hog and lamb pens required to house animals will be borrowed from the Wayne County Fairboard. He noted the drainage project is being made possible by a grant from the Carroll County Foundation and one from the Carroll Electric Co-op’s People to People program. “We purchased the block and plan to have the Jr. Fair office ready inside the new barn for this year’s fair,” he noted. “It may not be finished, but it will be available for us which will eliminate the need for a trailer to be parked beside the building.” Plans also call for the installation of a wash rack on the east side of the building. Frew noted a new wooden tie rack for steers is being installed in the metal barn as part of the continuing update of Jr. Fair facilities.

On The Cover Members of the 2013 Carroll County Jr. Fairboard are shown reaching for the Jr. Fair logo. Clockwise from the lower left they include: Dalton Ulman, Natalie Romeo, Lauren Rutledge, Brandie Jo Tinlin, Josie Snair, Tanner Kauffman, Chelsea Frase, Cheyenne Morsheiser, Jaycee Flanagan, Eliza Days, Liz Bormuth, Brittany Rohr, Jennifer Barnhart and Sarah Barnhart.

Still accepting applications for the following high school programs: Popular rock’n roll throwback band to perform Wednesday Phil Dirt and the Dozers (pictured above) will present a tribute to the Beach Boys during their Carroll County Fair performance July 17 on the stage in front of the grandstand. The show begins at 7 p.m. Admission is $3. Phil Dirt and the Dozers is a throwback to the 50s, 60s and 70s classic rock’n roll singing of the Four Seasons, Righteous Brothers and Beach Boys among others.

Fair admission remains the same at five bucks! Five bucks will still get you into the 2013 Carroll County Fair which runs from July 15-21. However, if you want to ride the mechanical rides, it will cost an extra $5. But – if you intend to attend the fair more than four days, it is cheaper to buy a $20 membership or Exhibitor ticket which entitles you admission to the fair anytime during the six-day run and it will also help out on the expenses for the fair. There will be free admission until 3 p.m. Tuesday and Wednesday of the fair and includes all activities except rides, side shows and some grandstand performances. Wednesday has been designated as Senior Citizens Day when persons 65 or older will be admitted free. All persons two years of age and older must have a ticket, except members of the military in uniform and residents of the Carroll Golden Age Retreat (County Home). If an exhibitor enters and brings a project to the fair (livestock or still project), they will receive a free wrist band that will allow them to enter the fair without paying admission. Club advisors will pay $7 per wrist band and Cloverbuds will pay $2/wrist band. Boy Scouts and Girls Scouts will pay $5/per wrist band for youth and $7/wrist band for leaders with a limit of two Scout leaders per troop. Advisors and leaders will have wrist bands of admission. If lost, there will be a $5 cost to replace and they must pay $5 to ride each day. Those holding a membership or exhibitors pass who wish to ride mechanical rides must also pay $5 each day. Memberships and exhibitor tickets entitle the holder to enter the fairgrounds anytime. All memberships, exhibitor and Junior Fair passes will be punched each day they are used and cannot be used again that day. If you plan to leave the grounds and return, you must have a ride stamp or a Carroll County Fair stamp to be re-admitted. These stamps may be obtained at any entry or exit gate. Memberships may be purchased from the Secretary (Tammy Sanderson) or any Fair Board members who are listed in this Fair tab. Only exhibitor tickets will be sold at the gates, but this may be exchanged for a membership at the Secretary’s office located under the grandstand. Membership tickets entitle the holder, if a resident of Carroll County and 18 years old or older, to vote at the annual Fair Board election or to hold office in the Carroll County Agricultural Society. Memberships must be purchased on or before the last day of the fair (July 21). All persons who plan to exhibit at the Carroll County Fair are required to have a membership or exhibitor ticket. Due to limited space, the camper area on the east side of the fairgrounds will be for livestock exhibitors and concession people only. The fee will be $130 for each space. Everyone staying in a camper must have a membership or fair pass and all campers must have a permit, which are available at the secretary’s office prior to setup.
