2018 - The Year Canungra Went Mental
The 80th Canungra Show culminated in the town’s first music festival - Canungra Show ROCKS, sponsored by Canungra Rise. Haystack Mountain Hermits warmed up the crowd on the Pavilion stage before local band The Point 0 Five rocked the Main Arena Stage. The crowd gathered for Sally Skelton’s haunting performance of a mix of original songs and covers. The surprise of the night was Gold Coast hip-hop/funk sensation Electrik Lemonade. Drawing on their unique blend of influences they presented an energetic, visual performance. They had the crowd on their feet and left everyone feeling pumped. Crowd favourites were the legendary Australian band, Mental As Anything. They have had several changes to their line up over the years, but popular lead singer Greedy Smith is still touring and still knows how to get a crowd going.
The audience danced throughout their performance with the crowd ranging from teenagers to those who have known and loved ‘The Mentals’ since 1977. Earlier, the 80th Canungra Show was officially opened by Canungra AH&I Society Patron Joyce Libke, who attended the first Canungra Show as a child; and past Society President Doug Bradfield. Joyce arrived in the Main Arena by horse and sulky, courtesy of Scenic Horse & Carriage Co. She gave an overview of the early history of the Canungra Show and how the community banded together to create the infrastructure needed. Both Moriarty Park and Canungra Showground had a festival feel with a Flyball competition, bubble football and billy cart races at Moriarty Park. Canungra Owls Soccer Club also held the U12 Division 2 Mixed Semi-Final at Moriarty Park. The Show Society, Soccer Club and Moriarty Park Committee worked
together ensure the events were successful for each organisation involved. Canungra AH&I Society President, Airlie Worrall said the 80th Canungra Show was a vibrant mix of everything Canungra has to offer. “With the involvement of most of our community organisations, local businesses and volunteers, Canungra is truly a Show for the whole community,” said Airlie. “We are fortunate to receive the support of so many local businesses as sponsors and the participation of community organisations and residents in running competitions and stalls,” she said. “The music concert brought something to Canungra that isn’t often offered. At the same time we wanted to showcase the talent of local bands such as Haystack Mountain Hermits and The Point 0 Five,”said Airlie. “The Society would like to thank everyone involved, especially our sponsors and the huge band of volunteers, without whom the Show would not go on,” she said.

A New Take on Mountain Biking
Phil Hystek recently travelled to Seoul in South Korea to compete in Unicon 19 - the World Championships for unicycling. Phil competed against the best riders in the world in his chosen discipline, Muni. Muni is Mountain Unicycling - unicycling’s equivalent of two wheel mountain biking. Phil competed in the “Muni” (Mountain Unicycling - unicycling’s equivalent of two wheel mountain biking. In the Men’s 50+ division, Phil finished second in the Cross Country and fourth in the Down Hill. Not for the faint hearted, both the Cross Country and Down Hill are held on tracks which would make even experienced two wheel mountain bikers hold their breath. No stranger to extreme or unusual sports, Phil is the Chief Instructor of Paragliding Queensland and has been paragliding for 27 years and has competed in the sport at a high level. He was the Canungra Foodworks Sportsperson of the year in 2009 for his two wheel mountain bike exploits. He took to one wheel mountain cycling in 2012 after meeting a paragliding student who had a municycle in his car. “You tend to think unicycles are a joke, or for fun, like clowns at the circus, but one wheel is way more challenging than two,” said Phil. “The reality is that the concentration required to ride one wheel fast off road is on a completely different level than that required to ride two wheels,” he said. “And it makes everyone smile.”

Tamborine resident, Wayne Lampard and Charlie Fraser (from Varsity Lakes and a former soldier, like Wayne) got home after nearly 13 hours driving back from Blackall. Wayne was on a mission - after seeing the devastation of the drought, he decided to do a ‘feed run’, relying on donated feed and semi-trailers and volunteer drivers to help farmers in Western Queensland. “Our only disappointment was our donated semitrailer had to be withdrawn as it was required,” said Wayne, “So, we arrived in the eight tonne truck that I had rented to go with the semi. Consequently 60 round bales had to be left behind until the next run.” On arrival at Blackall, Wayne met Steve, his contact from the Blackall-Tambo Regional Shire, who had organised some local men to help unload the truck, which took no more than 30 minutes. The town was holding a civic event that night to celebrate Blackall’s 150 anniversary and officially open the new sales yards and Wayne and his crew were invited to join in. “At the opening we were introduced to a few of the town’s key stakeholders as word of what we had done had spread. They were

very appreciative of the donation and what is to follow in a few weeks time,” said Wayne. Mayor of Blackall, Andrew L Martin, described what Wayne was doing as ‘unbelievable’. For the return journey Wayne and Charlie purchased four large bags of dog food for a farmer droving his cattle along the highway. “We may have been out of feed for the cattle and horses but we could do something to help with his working dogs,” said Wayne.
The ‘Western Queensland Stock Feed Run’ Facebook page gives more information about Wayne’s trips and how to help. The next Western Queensland Stock Feed Run is scheduled to leave on 15th September. Wayne says he has three semitrailers available for the run on 15th September - , one is full and he is now working on filling the road train which has been donated by Bill Minton through Volvo Australia.

‘Gorgeous’ George a Winner
Numinbah Correctional Centre’s Charolais bull, Jay Tees Loyalty (Gorgeous George to his friends), was sashed Reserve Champion Open Bull at the 80th Canungra Show. The women prisoners at the centre spent hours in the week leading up to the show preparing George for the competition as part of their farm work. Numinbah Correctional Centre is a 119-bed, low security women’s work farm. Numinbah Correctional Centre Deputy General Manager Julie Steinheuer said Queensland Corrective Services was committed to providing prisoners with vocational skills to increase opportunities to reintegrate successfully into society upon release. “The women are extremely proud of their work on show prepping George as a part of their work on the farm,” Ms Steinheuer said. “The team skills and vocational training they receive at the farm improves the chances of the women gaining employment on release, with some working towards a Certificate II in Rural Operations. With Spring upon us (already!) it’s time for that annual de-clutter and clean that comes with the season…but are you cleaning your own home or someone else’s? Last month our community was lucky enough to be part of the 80th Canungra Show – and it rocked! We just wanted to give a shout out to the army of volunteers who dedicated an enormous amount of their own time to make the show as enjoyable as it was. Our branch was proud to sponsor the Pavilion and we were amazed by the creativity of our community. To see the student drawings, photographs, baked goodies, Lego creations and so much more was truly inspirational – there is something special about small town agricultural shows and we look forward to being part of it for many years to come. We also just wanted to give a shout out to our very own Candice who was awarded the Judges Choice for her cooking – we love that we got the offcuts and a few samples here at the branch – we’re definitely encouraging her to continue to “practice” over the next 12 months! In October our town will once again turn pink for the annual fundraising event for Cancer – Turning Canungra Pink shirts are available for purchase at the branch ($35). Time to Get the Scarecrows Out!
Tamborine Mountain will parade an array of scarecrows for the eleventh year in September, with the official Scarecrow Festival between 14th to 16th September. The 17km Trail across the mountain plateau will once again be lined with unique Scarecrows. Scarecrow judging begins at 10am on Friday 14th September. The fun begins on Friday night at Tamborine Mountain Memorial Sports Centre (Tamborine Bowls Club) on Beacon Road, with Barefoot Bowls from 6pm, dinner in the restaurant and live entertainment by Gold Coast duo Ben Amor Ben Amor does blues, jazz, funk, soul, covers, looping, acoustic, electric, vocal percussion loops...you name it Ben Amor does it! The Scarecrow Family Festival will be held at the Tamborine Mountain Showground on Main Western Road from 10am on Saturday 15th September. For a Gold Coin Entry Fee per person mascots Hay-den
and his charming wife Hay-lee invite everyone to share in the fun. There will be loads of Stallholders, Face Painting, Pig Races, Baby Animal Farm, Rides, and heaps of family entertainment for everyone to enjoy. Entries in the Poetry Competition and the Children’s Colouring Competition will be on display with prizes for the best entries. The fun continues throughout the weekend with Buskers and street entertainment in Main Street and along Gallery Walk. Fresh local produce will be on sale at the Green Shed at the Showground and at local farm gates. Saturday concludes with a Lantern Parade around the Main Street garden precinct from 4.30pm. The Festival concludes Sunday afternoon from 3pm at Fortitude Brewery venue with the Awards Ceremony where the winners in each Scarecrow category will be awarded.

College Ready for New Senior Schooling System
Tamborine Mountain College is ready to roll out the new Senior Assessment and Tertiary Entrance system. Starting with Year 11 in 2019, Tamborine Mountain College is excited to launch new Senior Secondary subjects such as French and Psychology, and to say goodbye to the QCS test. Our staff have been busy this year attending workshops and training sessions to ensure a smooth transition for the first year of implementation. There are many positives with the system such as only four assessment items over the two-year courses. For most subjects, the means a significant reduction in the number of assessment items. TMC Year Ten students complete a SATE Preparation course in Term 4 to ensure readiness in regards to subject-specific skills and good study habits. While change can often be daunting, we are ready and excited at Tamborine Mountain College to embrace the new Senior Assessment and Tertiary Entrance system and all the benefits it brings to students.

Aquis Raises $60,000 for Farmers Battling Drought
Aquis, together with many generous supporters from around the Thoroughbred industry, raised more than $60,000 to help farmers facing one of the toughest droughts in a generation. The money was raised at Aquis’ third annual Queensland Stallion Parade on Sunday 19th August and at the Aquis Race Day at Muswellbrook on Tuesday. Aquis CEO Shane McGrath said the company was not surprised by the generosity of its friends in the racing industry. “The racing and farming industries have always had a close affinity and many of the staff at Aquis have seen first-hand the devastating impact of the current drought,” he said. “We wanted to do something that could make a real difference to those that need it.” “We have not been surprised by the generosity of the many supporters who put their hands in their pockets at the stallion parade and at Muswellbrook.” “Hopefully, these funds can help ease the pressure for some of our friends in the bush.” The annual stallion parade at the company’s Canungra property attracted more

Annual Ladies’ Service
Canungra Uniting Church held their annual Ladies’ Service on Friday 3rd August, with guest speaker Hélène Savage giving a moving address to the packed church. Hélène and her husband Andrew worked for 22 years in a displaced project for an oral people group, making friends, helping the community take pride in their language, locating a small team to start Bible translation, developing a database of local proverbs and a multilingual online dictionary. Throughout the years, the couple were also enthusiastic recruiters for the unfinished task of Bible translation. Andrew completed a 2000km-for-2000-languages walk in 2010 in Queensland, and subsequently wrote a book about it called Walking Home. Andrew passed away unexpectedly in France in October 2016, following elective surgery to remove a non-cancerous mass in the cerebellum. Hélène currently lives in Australia and helps colleagues and various entities with English/French translations of documents. One source of joy to Hélène is that the bible translation project is ongoing, in the capable hands of a younger couple who Andrew and Hélène had been coaching for a number of years.

Don’t answer the phone... At the moment I’m not surprised if people start to run when they see me. From the paper to rodeo, show and now Turning Canungra Pink, I feel like I’m running about with my hand out for donations, advertising or general help. In each of these events and with the paper as well, I work with a fantastic team (and for the paper I include the advertisers and people who write columns for me in that team) and there is no way everything would get done if there wasn’t so much help. I am starting to feel like I only talk to people when I want something, and if that is the way people are feeling about me, I’m not surprised (and I apologise and totally understand if you run)! I may be a bit old-fashioned, but I believe the local newspaper should be the glue that binds the community together; and as the Editor I feel a responsibility to help promote and assist our community. I’ve seen Turning Canungra Pink’s Pink Assist fund work to help our local residents battling cancer. I really believe this is a great initiative and I urge everyone to get behind the events and have a great time while supporting a fantastic cause! Canungra - small town, big heart!
Road Crossing
To whom it may concern, After recently having my first baby I was wanting to take her for walks in her
pram to help and recover from my c-section. As I began going for our afternoon walk I realised there is no safe place to cross the main street in Canungra. We have no permanent crossing area as the school one is only in operation in school times. There is a lack of footpaths in the old sections of Canungra. With the continuous build up of people in the area, the cars are now parked in the street at all times, forcing everyone including parents with prams, the disabled and the general public to unsafely walk in the middle of the streets. I am not asking for much as this town needs a crossing. On the weekends the town centre is busy and people are taking risk to get across the road. I feel the risk is not just in the centre of town but up the streets when we walk on the roads instead of foot paths. Sincerely, Samantha Ford
Making Kidston Street Safer Dear Editor,
As residents of Kidston Street, we would like to thank the Scenic Rim Regional Council and Councillor Virginia West for organising the painting of two large arrows on the one-way section of our street, although one more arrow beside the beer garden would alert those who pull over immediately and then U-turn. We first raised our concerns and suggested the arrows some months ago at a community consultation held at the Canungra State School. The safety issues we raised related to vehicles going the wrong way down the one-way section of Kidston Street past the police station. These errors potentially created the risk of serious accidents at the blind corner just past the pub. Obviously, most offenders are not familiar with this one-way section of Kidston Street. These errors are of two types.

The first type are drivers who enter from the upper end of Kidston Street. In the past three months I have seen a concrete truck, a water tanker and a large ute and trailer make this error and exit onto Lamington National Park Road. The second type of error occurs with drivers who enter the bottom end of Kidston Street and park to visit the police station or the pub, and then later exit the wrong way. I have also observed travellers in large camper vans or towing caravans enter Kidston Street, immediately pull over, check their GPS, then reverse, u-turn and exit the wrong way. Anyone regularly turning up Kidston Street will appreciate the risks of a head-on collision with any such vehicles, or the risk of being rear-ended by following vehicles if they brake to allow a misguided vehicle to exit. These arrows, especially if one more is added beside the beer garden, should greatly reduce this error rate in the one-way section of Kidston Street, and hence make it safer for we locals, so a big thank you to Virginia and Council. Youth Helping Out Our Community Local teenager, Dane Walker has a huge load with Year 11 Studies and a range of outside activities, but he always finds time to help local community organisations. Dane was born in Blackpool, UK and moved to Australia with his family 10 years ago. Initially they lived on the Gold Coast but moved to Ferny Glen about 18 months ago. Dane attends Queensland Academies Health Sciences campus and is currently in Year 11. He is hoping to study Mechatrinic Engineering at QUT in 2020. He enjoys training in Mixed Martial Arts, and is a red belt and will hopefully attain his black belt next year. For the past two years, Dane has been helping out local community organisations including the Canungra AH&I Society and Turning Canungra Pink. Dane loves anything to do with technology or music but enjoys a challenge in anything. At the Canungra Show recently, Dane was given the opportunity to help with the staging and sound set up for Canun-

Council’s Fresh Approach
A refreshed organisational structure for Scenic Rim Regional Council will foster renewed leadership and accountability, promoting an efficient, productive workforce and improved support for the Scenic Rim community, according to Mayor Greg Christensen. Mayor Christensen announced a transformation of the organisational structure which he says will better align Council roles and responsibilities to improve the delivery of services and infrastructure. “Ten years on from amalgamation and on the cusp of a new Planning Scheme the first for the Scenic Rim region - it was time to take a fresh look at our structure and operations to ensure we continue to meet the needs of the community and our staff,” he said. “With some changes in senior staff and the arrival of our new CEO in March this year, it was timely to re-focus on the structural review. The CEO has completed a wide-ranging review and presented an organisational design. “Our new organisational structure is now closely aligned with our community vision, and has been designed around the key themes that already flow through our Community, Corporate and Operational Plans. “Chief Executive Officer Jon Gibbons has welcomed Council’s endorsement of a refreshed structure and looked forward to the positive benefits it will bring to the organisation and the Scenic Rim community. “While the last significant review of our organisational structure was at amalgamation in 2008, the Scenic Rim region has continued to advance and mature over the past 10 years,” he said. “It was clear that the community needed an agile, modern and efficient workforce to meet its needs and expectations. It was also important to create a dynamic and rewarding workplace that has the ability to adapt and cater for change. “This structure will ensure Council will continue to retain and recruit the best possible workforce, and ensure we’re ready to meet the future needs of the Scenic Rim community.” Council is not expecting any redundancies as part of the implementation of the new organisational structure. Council’s immediate focus will be on working with staff to communicate changes and ensure a smooth transition as existing roles are realigned and staff are recruited for vacancies within the new structure.

The Scenic Rim community is being urged to have its say on the region’s first ever unified planning scheme during the public consultation process on the Draft Scenic Rim Planning Scheme which begins next month. Mayor Greg Christensen said the Draft Scenic Rim Planning Scheme represented an important milestone in the region’s 10-year journey following the establishment of Scenic Rim Regional Council in 2008. “Guided by the Scenic Rim Community Plan, the new planning scheme will replace the existing planning schemes of the former Beaudesert Shire, Boonah Shire and Ipswich City Council areas within the Scenic Rim local government area and will underpin development aligned with the community’s shared vision for our region for the next 20 years,” he said. “The new planning scheme has been developed in the context of the State Government’s Planning Act 2016 as well as the Shaping SEQ South East Queensland Regional Plan 2017 and the State Planning Policy. “It aims to provide certainty to Scenic Rim residents, landowners and investors by identifying land use intent for particular areas, Council’s plans for infrastructure to support growth and balance the social and economic development of the region and to protect and enhance our region’s lifestyle and the natural assets valued by the community. “This is a valuable opportunity for the entire Scenic Rim community to help shape the future of our region and I encourage everyone to have their say during the community consultation period which will run from 26th September.” Further details on the community consultation will be announced in coming weeks.

RSL Sub Branch This year’s service commenced with the presentation of the Unit Citation for Gallantry to Vietnam Veteran, Mr David Day. The citation was pinned on David’s chest by Commanding Officer of the Warrant Officer and Non-Commission Officer Academy, Lieutenant Colonel Andrew Campbell. The presentation was witnessed by veterans who serviced in Vietnam, East Timor, the Persian Gulf, Iraq and Afghanistan. Councillors Nadia O’Carroll and Virginia West, both strong supporters of the veteran’s community were present along with members of David’s family, friends and mates. Lieutenant Colonel Campbell delivered an inspiring speech that brought both the old and younger veterans together as one. The Colonel pointed out the important role that Canungra area has played over the period from the Second World War up to and including today’s training. Following the service, most in attendance adjourned to the Canungra Services Club for refreshments and a fun afternoon. Whilst at the Club, David was presented with a framed copy of the 3rd Battalion, Royal Australian Regiment, Unit Citation for Gallantry and a framed Order of the Day This year’s Remembrance Day marks the 100th Anniversary of the signing of the Armistice that officially ended the First World War. The day will be commemorated at D J Smith Memorial Park commencing at 10.30am, Sunday 11th November 2018. The morning’s activity will be conducted in two phases. First, a keynote address

Canungra’s biggest fundraising activity is on again! Turning Canungra Pink commences a little early this year with the Pink Polo on Sunday 23rd September and Pink Trivia on Saturday 29th September (please note change of date for the trivia due to a clash with the NRL Grand Final). It will be a month of fun activities including a Fashion Parade, Soccer Match, Pink Dinner and the inclusion of the 100 Years on the Ground celebrations (the centenary of the Canungra Sport and Recreation Grounds). A range of merchandise is also available including lip gloss, polo shirts, bandanas and candles. Educational Leaders Exchange Program
Principal Kylie Todhunter welcomed Ms Safiah Binti Haji Fadzil to Canungra State School as part of the Educational Leaders Exchange Program. Ms Safiah is the Headmistress of SK Convent School in Muar, Malaysia. “It is an honour for us to have Ms Safiah visit our school and be a part of our school community this week,” said Mrs Todhunter. “On behalf of the school, I welcome Ms Safiah to Canungra State School and I hope that she has a most enjoyable and beneficial visit with us.” This Exchange program has two main purposes, to expand the knowledge and experiences of Ms Safiah and Mrs Todhunter as school principals and to develop an ongoing relationship and collaboration between the two schools. Other goals from the visit include: • Collaborate in improving the standard of excellence in both schools • Work together to generate excellence in academics and student global affairs • Cooperate in developing the potential outcomes of students and teachers between the two schools • Improve the knowledge and experience of the teachers in both schools through sharing and discussion • To exchange ideas, experiences, creativity and innovation in education. Eisteddfod Success
Following the enjoyable and productive Choral Day of Excellence between Canungra State School and St Bernard’s State School, the combined choir successfully won their division in the recent Gold Coast Eisteddfod. It was the choir’s first time competing in the Gold Coast Eisteddfod and all the students ranging from Year 2 through to Year 6 were ecstatic to receive the award. Led by the dedicated and supportive music teacher, Stef Lorimer, the choir’s recitation of Klee Wyck and Eye of the Needle impressed the judges and audience alike. A special thank you to Year 5 Canungra State School student Sidney Cook, whose percussion playing added an extra dimension to the performance. The choir would like to acknowledge Glenn Lorimer for his talented

accompanying. What a wonderful way to foster our community spirit.
Japanese Speaking Competition
Congratulations to our students from year 4, 5 and 6 who were selected to represent Canungra State School at the LOTE Speaking Competition. Loreli, Mikayla, Keely, Amity, Chloe and Mia all performed well. Mia, Chloe and Mikayla all received a Highly Commended and Keeley received third place.
Adventure Playground
Thanks to the generous donation from one of the School’s families and the hard work and skill of the grounds team, the final changes to the new playground are underway. This included a sandpit, additional seating and a new garden bed has been started.
Canungra State School Canungra State School Athletics Carnival Results
Canungra State School held their Athletics Carnival (field and track) during August. Congratulations to all of the students who participated. The students competed with enthusiasm, competitiveness and displayed great team spirit and sportsmanship by encouraging others and cheering them on. On Friday afternoon the junior school held their ball and tabloid games. From all reports the students had a great time showing off all of their ball skills. At the conclusion of the field events on Monday which the Year 4 – 6 students competed in, Witheren was 1st on 281 points, Wonglepong were 2nd on 261 points, Sarabah was on 231 points and Flying Fox was on 166 points. After all of the track events were completed on Tuesday, the end results were as follows: 1st Witheren – 561 points - Champion House (The Campbell Family Trophy) 2nd Wonglepong – 492 points 3rd Sarabah - 489 points 4th Flying Fox - 386 points

Heritage Listing for Graves
Three areas of significance to the region have been proposed for inclusion in the Scenic Rim Local Heritage Register, including a cemetery in Canungra. Subject to community consultation, a private cemetery at Finch Road, Canungra; Knoll Road, and a weir over Plunkett Creek at Tamborine Mountain have been endorsed by Council for local heritage listing. Division 3 Councillor Virginia West said the Weir over Plunkett Creek at Roslyn Court, Tamborine Mountain, was constructed by Norman and Vonda Youngman in 1958 and was evidence of cropping and grazing on Tamborine Mountain in the midtwentieth century. “The cemetery at Finch Road, Canungra, includes the graves of a number of people of importance to Canungra’s local history - the Smith, Duncan, Christie, Marsden and Murray families - dating from 1890,” she said. “Knoll Road played a role in the early settlement of Tamborine Mountain and the development of its agriculture and tourism industries.” Division 1 Councillor Nigel Waistell said that as the first road up to the plateau of the mountain and the only access route for wheeled traffic between 1877 and 1920 it was an area of significant local heritage. “Knoll Road is certainly a special place and the area is well maintained by the Friends of Knoll Road,” he said. Council will seek community feedback before the sites are included in the Scenic Rim Local Heritage Register.

Council Comment By Cr Virginia West Scenic Rim Regional Council
Draft Scenic Rim Planning Scheme This long awaited unified Scenic Rim Planning Scheme was last month adopted by Council in draft form to proceed to public notification in the coming weeks. This is a very significant document to provide certainty to land owners and investors by identifying the specific land use intents for various areas. Public consultation will take a number of forms with more information to follow.
Mobile Australian Government Service Centre The mobile van will be in Canungra opposite the Library in Kidston Street on Thursday 6th September from 9am to 3pm for residents to conduct any Australian Government business or request information. The staff can also assist in creating a myGov account if you need one.
Women In Rural Enterprise Program This 12-week program offers rural and regional businesswomen the opportunity to study with a virtual program. The course is being run by Advance Queensland and the University of Southern Queensland, with Council’s support, and is designed for women already in business or those who are considering a business idea. Vietnam And Veterans Day The Canungra RSL Sub Branch hosted a very moving and inclusive service which for the second year included veterans from wars since Vietnam. This very progressive move to welcome recent veterans is now being adopted by other Sub Branches. Congratulations to David Day who was awarded a significant Unit Citation for Gallantry for his brave actions at the Battle of Coral/Balmoral in May 1968. What a privilege it was for us all present to share this special event with you, David.
Canungra Show Congratulations and thank you to the very hard working Show Society and all your volunteers who ensured that the 80th Canungra Show was an event to remember. The new format of a Rock Show proved to be hugely successful. This event takes many months of organising and is very much part of the heritage of our rural regional area.

Nature’s Gems
Red-capped Plover (Charadrius reficapillus) By Melissa Whitby Living in South-east Queensland has always provided me with amazing opportunities to observe native birds. Over the last few years, I have developed an extensive appreciation of shorebirds. Some of these birds live in Australia as resident species and others migrate to and from Australia to breed. One such shorebird species which I always love observing is the Red-capped Plover. This small plover is easily recognised by its size, reddish head cap and white breast and underparts. Similar species to the Redcapped Plover are the Red-necked Stint, Double-banded Plover and Ringed Plover. Red-necked Stint and Ringed Plover are easy to identify as they lack the red cap and Double-banded Plover have to bands across their chest which Red-capped Plovers lack. Red-capped Plovers are often observed in pairs, singly or mixed flocks with other shorebirds. Their preferred habitat are expansive sandy beaches but will also inhabit tidal mudflats and sandflats, shallow freshwater wetlands and edges of saline wetlands. These birds have a distribution that extends throughout Australia and are common in suitable habitat. Red-capped Plovers are a bird species that usually are only found in Australia with some birds turning up in New Zealand on occasion. The nest of the Redcapped Plover is a basic scrape in the sand placed strategically to be camouflaged amongst surrounding marine debris and plant matter. Two eggs are laid and the breeding season is between July and January in southern Australia. In northern Australia, I have observed the birds with eggs in June. These endearing birds are always a common sight on Australian beaches and have adapted to the presence to people. However, when nesting the birds do not react well to disturbance. I would recommend always observing the behaviour of these birds to ensure that disturbance is minimal. Red-capped Plovers are a bird species that I have observed since I was very young. For anyone wishing to learn bird species that inhabit beaches, this is one of the species that I would recommend becoming familiar with first. I am sure that they will captivate you as they do me, as I never have become tired of looking at them in 30 years I having been observing them!

A Truly Curious Creature
Spiny Leaf Insect (Extatosoma tiaratum)
By Susan Cully This bizarre looking insect is a leaf mimic. On a plant it looks just like a leaf. It uses colour and body shape to confuse predators. It is closely related to stick insects. It is a vegetarian insect, eating only leaves. It is not a close relative of the carnivorous mantids (Preying Mantis and friends) which eat insects, arthropods and other Spiny Leaf Insect. Photo courtesy: little creepy crawlies. Queensland Museum Our native Spiny Leaf Insects are well known worldwide because they are easy to keep as pets. There is a fabulous enclosure on display in the Discovery Centre at the Queensland Museum. This leaf insect is also known as Macleay’s Spectre. It was because of its ‘ghostly’ appearance that it was chosen to terrify movie-goers for the 1984 movie, Indiana Jones and the Temple of Doom. Though harmless to humans this insect has a whole suite of defensive habits: they can inflict a very painful pinch with the back legs, they can try to look scary by curling the tail like a scorpion, they can become even more cryptic by swaying back and forth like a fluttering leaf, they might emit clicking sounds, the male may attempt to startle predators by flashing their wings open and as a, pièce de résistance, they can produce a defensive odour said to smell a bit like toffee. Still more amazingly the females are occasionally capable of breeding parthenogenetically (without fertilization) in the absence of males, laying fewer eggs that take much longer to hatch. Add to all of this the fact that ants like to eat the knob on top of the eggs, take the egg back to their nests for safe shelter and then co-mingle with the ant-like nymphs as they hatch unharmed. And there’s more...they have the astonishing ability to walk on water, enabling them to cross ponds and still water, unlike their cousins.

News from St Luke’s By Di Ayscough Last month, I talked about gratitude, the importance of appreciating what we have, and what we are able to achieve. I would like to extend those thoughts to consider life’s challenges. While many challenges may be unexpected and need to be dealt with in different ways, I recently challenged myself by trekking (190km) over the Larapinta Trail in the West MacDonnell Ranges of the NT. With a small band of seven strangers and two guides we had to quickly develop a sense of trust and respect as we were all challenged to step out of our comfort zones. It was never a case of giving up, it was always a case of seeing the challenge ahead and achieving it, one step at a time. Attending church or deciding to do something different could well bring challenges. Who will I sit with? What if I don’t know what to do? What if I feel unwanted? This list could go on. If you have any of these thoughts I encourage you to put them all aside and take up the challenge. You could very easily become part of St Luke’s “team”. Perhaps attending the Bible Discussions on Tuesday evenings at 7.00pm would be a good start. Other upcoming events at St Luke’s include the end of month, Friday night get together in the pavilion. On Sunday 30th September St Luke’s invites you to bring your pet(s) along for the annual Pet Blessing service (7.45am). Coming up Sunday 21st October there will be a healing service for those who need a special prayer for themselves or others know to them (4.00pm) It was with much excitement, local resident, Emma of Wonglepong was drawn out as the winner of our recent fund-raising raffle. A two-night stay at O’Reillys, was a very popular prize.

DEFENCE PRACTICE AREA CANUNGRA FIELD TRAINING AREA QUEENSLAND
TRAINING AREA/RANGE NOISE NOTICE
Residents to areas surrounding the Canungra Field Training Area are warned that it is a Defence live firing range and to expect periods of heightened noise volume. Defence training includes firing practices with live ammunition, explosives, simulation devices and lasers that generally occur daily between 0700h – 1600h. Night time practices also occur and are generally completed before 2200h. During these core operating hours, residents in the surrounding areas may experience louder than normal noise levels. This could be due to a change in weather conditions or wind direction, or due to the type of munitions or simulation devices being employed to achieve a training outcome. Defence now has the capability to notify residents of increased periods of noise volume on the training area via an SMS alert. These alerts are intended to advise residents of an increased level of forecasted training area noise over a prescribed period of time. If you wish to be included in this notification process, please contact range control on (07) 5618 6270 and provide your name and mobile number. • The Gold Coast and District Golf Association Pennant Season has been completed with Canungra Men’s B Grade Team winning the Final. Congratulations Mark Byrne, Mark Watson, Sam Sami, Matt Voller, Bob Flitton, Brad Mahony, Rob Hewison, Dylan Brechbuhl and Terry Hill. • The Women’s Golf Gold Coast Pennant’s Season is also over with four Canungra Ladies competing this year - Shelly Bierma, Kim Sami, Gael Jarvis and Kathy Darlington • Congratulations to one of our junior golfers – James Thanomkai for his most recent success at the Queensland Junior Golf Fayde Points Challenge at Hills Golf Club with 1st place Boys Division 3. We would love to see more juniors enjoying the game so bring the kids along and get them started in a friendly relaxed atmosphere. • The Trivia Night held on 28th July was a huge success. The CAGC would like to thank Paul Gray and Graham Lowe for hosting a very entertaining and fun filled evening.

This is all possible due to funding received from the Sport and Recreation Get Playing funding and our amazing Volunteers. • Sandy celebrated her special Birthday on Saturday 18th August (her actual Birthday is on the 20th) with cake, presents and lots of Birthday wishes before she headed off on a well-deserved two week holiday. • With little to no rain, the golf course is quite dry but is still offering a fabulous round of golf. A huge thanks goes out to Ross Hewlett and his team - Steve Szabo and Nic Kelly. They have used these quiet mowing times to do a lot of extra maintenance and aesthetic jobs making the course and the golf club look extra special. We really appreciate what you are doing.

• Our Night Golf was also held on Friday 10th August. The night was dark and cold but so much fun. The feedback from all who attended was that we must do it again. Watch this space for our next Night Golf event. You don’t want to miss it. • The Canungra Area Golf Club Ladies are hosting their Open Day on the Tuesday 28th August with 50 ladies coming from all over the Gold Coast to experience our lovely country course. We look forward to sharing our piece of paradise with everyone. • The Monthly Veteran Stableford events are still proving very popular with a good field of players competing on the third Monday of each month. This year, we are excited to announce that our new award, Player of the Year (sponsored by The Outpost Café) is Rhys Bodey. Rhys plays on our men’s team and was awarded Player of the Year because of his consistency and teamwork on the field – well done Rhys! Our other major award is Club Person of the Year and this year was presented to Candice Wright. This season Candice captained, managed and played on the women’s team, helped the Club whenever she could and is organising a charity match for Turning Canungra Pink. On top of all of this Candice is the coach of our U12 Girls team, despite not having any children herself! I know all of those who have seen Candice’s young team in action know that the love of the game, teamwork and
sportsmanship is a direct result of her leadership and coaching. Candice is an absolute asset to our community and we are so very thankful for everything she does. We’re proud to announce that two of our junior teams were crowned “League Champions” after finishing top of their respective ladders. Well done on showing consistency throughout the entire season! Stay tuned for our article next month, as we announce the results of the finals. We are proud to say that 100% of our junior teams have made the grand final…not bad for a small Club who is based all the way “out there”. Good luck to our U12/2 Mixed, U12/2 Girls and U15/16 teams as they compete for the ultimate prize. It’s a great to be an Owl…hoot hoot!

Owen Maguire is the FoodWorks Sportsperson of the Month for August 2018. Owen is 11 years of age and recently won the AFL Brisbane Juniors 2018 Under 12 Division 5 Medal for Best and Fairest. The Award was presented to Owen at the Brisbane Juniors Gala Awards Night. The Best and Fairest is awarded to the player who receives the most votes from the umpires during the Home and Away season, by age August Sportsperson of the group. Month, Owen Maguire Owen lives in Canungra and attends Canungra State School. He has been playing AFL for the Jimboomba Redbacks since 2015. Owen also qualified for the District Championships in 800m and 1500m and placed in the top 5 at Griffith University Sports Ground. Owen also competed the District and Regional in cross country.
