Not yet a perfect world There are an untold number of subscribers from around the world who contact AgAir Update on a regular basis inquiring about working in Latin America, the U.S. and other foreign countries. I see a couple of problems associated with such inquires. The foremost issue is, as a matter of policy, AgAir Update does not recommend pilots to operators or viceversa. One can imagine the implications if a recommendation was made and for whatever reason the pilot and the operator became dissatisfied with each other. Pilots looking for work in a foreign country encounter huge obstacles. Many don’t realize the requirements in place that make it next to impossible to accomplish the move. It can be done, but it is extremely difficult and usually involves a strong relationship with someone from the other country. In most countries, it is the usual policy to hire local pilots. The reasons for this include licensing, work permits and in

foreign speaking countries, language and cultural differences. I find it difficult to understand why a pilot would want to relocate. I believe it is an undefined dream for a pilot to travel to a foreign land to fly in his “off” season. Sure, on the face of things, it seems like an excellent opportunity to earn more money and see the world. I doubt, for most, it would work out that way. Earlier this month, an inquiry came into our offices asking for contacts in Peru. This inquiry was a rice consultant who wanted to start up an aerial rice operation. To my knowledge, there are no rice operators in Peru. It may seem this would make it even more enticing, but I can assure you it only makes the possibility even more unlikely. I have travelled extensively throughout the world, mostly in Latin America, visiting ag-operations and talking to pilots. In many ways, the operations have similarities, regardless of which country I happen to be visiting. I can recall finding very few foreign pilots

working for any of them. There may be a foreign company operating somewhere, but I don’t remember any of those either. To put things into perspective, imagine a foreign operation setting up business across the road from you. What are the possibilities? It would be complicated at best. The same scenario holds true for a foreign pilot being hired. In a perfect world, relationships would be cultivated between operators on opposite sides of the equator. They would share aircraft and pilots improving each company’s efficiency. However, we all know we don’t live in a perfect world, yet. Until next month, Blue Sky and Tailwinds...

agair mail towers I was looking through some articles on “FAA guidance for marking the MET towers”, the problems and proposals, and I also saw that the FAA had rejected the idea of creation of a national data-base on these towers. Well, I had a thought - many car navigation units (GPS) carry all sorts of information - not just roads and streets, but gas stations, malls, radar traps, etc. And some can be user-updated not just for themselves but for the network of users (called “Community update” by TomTom.com, one brand that has this system) So, why not have a GPS system for aviation, giving audio and visual alerts for all sorts of hazards such as MET towers, wind turbines, power lines, cables, military areas, high ground, localized

wind and weather problems, etc. System needs to have an adjustable alert radius for audio output, just as the car ones have, and be updateable by its users so that all users get benefit of updates by others. This could be done by input from FAA publications including maps and any found hazards could be overflown to mark the location, with the description added later on the ground. This proposal would create a self-sustaining database which would be “world-wide” and would not be dependent on FAA nor any other government agency nor authority. It could also cover way more than just “MET towers less than 200 ft. high” (as would an FAA system, if set up) and could certainly cost users very much less than any government-run system.

This feature could of course be incorporated into the GPS systems that most ag aircraft carry for their work already. But, more likely and perhaps preferably, it would be a separate unit based on the car ones, carried and operated unofficially until FAA decide that actually it was them who invented the idea. Basically it would be just new display and alert software for GPS models similar to the car ones, and probably run by the same folks but just for a separate “community”, aviation instead of car drivers. So, as the technology is already in wide use, neither the units nor the further development will be very expensive. Of course, cellphones such as the Android already have apps which will do the same car navigation stuff, and are update-able. But possibly these depend on cell coverage for function, whereas proper GPS units do not. Regards Paul Randall Hamilton, New Zealand

Hello Randall; Good to hear from you in Kiwi land. I agree with you about a private database of sorts. Already, ag-av GPS companies have the hardware to accomplish this and may even have the software. .—Bill

Yes, that’s me in our Super B powered by a Super 1 Garrett. It’s really a nice performer, I guess you could probably compare it with a Ferrari. Our son Nick flew it this year and had a very good season. We’re proud of the job Jason did for the California association and the industry in putting together ‘The Modern Aerial Applicator”. He worked tirelessly on the project and with his employer Bob Hoag’s assistance, made it all happen. We’re glad that it’s finally getting out there and showing people the importance of the aerial application industry and how it affects their lives on a daily basis, whether they realize it or not. Keep up the good work Bill, and I’ll see you on the trail soon! Rick Richter 2011 NAAA President Maxwell, CA

salmon airplane The G-6 you guy’s wrote the article about in Alaska is actually an early ‘70s model Rockwell-built piston airplane with a 500-gallon hopper, it’s kind of the “average” Thrush, over 40 years old and a couple of STC’s stacked on top of each other. I looked up his contact info and left him a message, reason is that airplane left the factory with “light weight” gear and looking at the pictures, it looks like it still has them. Since he is landing off airport with a 500-gallon hopper full of diesel, I think he may want to look into finding a set of “heavy weight” landing gear

and ensuring he only uses NAS bolts to attach them. If you have his contact info, can you pass on my concerns? I’m afraid his gear will collapse on him if he doesn’t. Jody Bays Vice President Thrush Aircraft Inc. Albany, GA Morning Jody; I’m copying this email to Doug. It is pretty self-explanatory. However, I know that Doug doesn’t like to make fuel runs, so there’s not much of that being done, I don’t think. I know it only takes one pot hole or bounce to fail, or even crack the bolt(s) to fail later, when least expected. Hope all is well. Was at MidContinent yesterday and did a video of Mr. Dick. Need to preserve for history. See ya at Duster Doin’s. —Bill I change gear bolts every 24 months. Also, I have delivered about one half million gallons at least with that airplane with only finding one crack in gear. Tell Jody, he underestimates his Georgia welders. That gear is tough, or maybe it just my gentle landings. Doug Glenn Glenn Air, Inc Northern Reclamation Services LLC Palmer, AK

radio talk Morning Karl and Vicki; I was reading your comments, Karl, on the WMAAA (Mississippi) radio talk. Would you please fill me in about the WMAAA radio-thing in a reply email? Am I guessing correctly that WMAAA is the Women of MsAAA and they have a radio show?—Bill

Hello Doug; Good to hear from you and will pass on the info to Jody. I’d say it is a combination of the two, bolts and finesse. I got an email from Adam, your Gray whales off Glenn Air’s Thrush wingtip.

Your guess is correct for the women of the MsAAA. The radio deal was an interview with Paul Gallo on Super Talk radio. It was part of an advertising package purchased by the women promoting agricultural aviation. This is the second year they have done this. We’ve had a great response with the ad that runs during his show each morning. This year the Paul Gallo show was syndicated across the state, so we had a much larger audience. Our women have done a great job promoting for us. They’ve spent over twelve thousand dollars this year alone in advertising not just on radio but magazines and other periodicals as well. Neptune I give up. No one published that picture (Neptune aircraft in New Mexico) before I sent it to you. I suspect now that I saw it some where on the Net and it got erased before I got curious enough to follow up on it. Oh well, a hundred years from now no one will care anyway. Sort of a ho-hum response to the

agairupdate.com

Mystery Plane wasn’t it? Maybe most people know a Neptune when they see one. Well, I know one guy who didn’t. In ‘94 Greg Hock and I had T-01 at Redding. It was an Aero Union “Firestar”. That is a Dash 7 Neptune with the jets and some other stuff removed to get the gross down to 60,000 pounds. We were on standby and when those guys at the base turn on the air conditioner you could make ice cream in the place. This ol’ desert rat went out to the viewing area where it was warm. Overheard an ol’geezer with a large entourage of kids (if they were all his, he sure was a sexy ol’fart) telling that it was an A-20. I politely informed him that it was a Neptune P2V, not an A-20. Ol’geezer got testy. Don’t tell him! He knew an A-20 when he saw one etc, etc, worked on them in WWII, yadda, yadda. I just listened. Never did tell him that I was copilot on the airplane in question. Russ Walker Brawley, CA Hi ya Russ, Well, the Neptune is not that common of an aircraft in the ag-av community, so not too surprised about the

response. I know what you mean about “Ol’ geezer”. I’m fast approaching that stage! I bet you wished the jets had been left on the Neptune!—Bill Yeah that Ol’ Geezerdom is not that great. Am now waking up about the time that I used to go to bed. The jets on a Neptune helped out in a climb but I doubt that they were cost effective. For double the fuel burn they would haul 2450 gallons of retardant as opposed to 2000 gallons for the Aero Union airplanes. Bob Kelly and I were flying T-11 out of Wenatchee one afternoon and it was a climb all the way to the fire. (the jets were only run for take off and climb, then air started and standby at idle for the drop) The fuel burn was 625 gal/hr. I have pumped $2000 of fuel into those things several times, even up to $2400 now and then. That was in the 80s. I wonder what it would cost today? Russ Walker Brawley, CA

Morris I’m Claire Morris, Jim Morris’ daughter. Thank you very much for such a nice article about dad. He’s my hero and I

am so proud that someone else thought enough of his accomplishments to put them onto paper. I am very grateful. I’m also quite impressed with your writing ability. You have quite a knack for easy flowing, articulate information. I would have enjoyed the article even if it weren’t about the old man and I look forward to reading more from you in the future. Thank you again. Claire Morris Claire; Thank You so much for the kind words! I was honored to have the opportunity to work with your Dad this past season. He has become a hero of mine as well. Jim is a great guy with volumes of knowledge and experience. I am very happy to have had the opportunity to get know him and to write a small part of his story to share with the rest of the ag air world. I’m sure it caused him to blush a bit but that’s okay; a guy like Jim should have a few “blush moments” in his life. If it’s alright I would like to forward your e-mail to Bill Lavender, editor of Ag Air Update. Feed back from readers is always an important thing and I

think he would like to see it. Thanks again, and please tell your Dad hello for me and I’m looking forward to working him again next year. Sincerely; Tracy T Thurman

Ranging far and wide: Dungan Aerial Service, Inc. After more than two decades of flying, and with over 15 years of ag flying under his belt, Jeff Dungan is obviously in it for the long haul. Literally. “With the kind of work we do,” says Dungan, “Long ferries are just part of the job.” Founded in 1997, Dungan Aerial Service, Inc. headquarters in the far east-central part of the state, at the Connersville, Indiana municipal airport. The company also operates a satellite base in northwest Indiana from the Starke County airport at Knox. Dungan has customers located from one end of Indiana to the other, so he spends a good part of his time flying to and from the fields he sprays. “We fly primarily in the southwest, central, and east central parts of the state around Kokomo and Marion,” says Dungan. “And we do a significant amount of work in northwest Indiana

and some in Ohio and Illinois.” To cover that much territory Dungan operates a fleet of just two AT-802 aircraft – an ‘09 and a 2011 model – which was the 400th AT-802 to come off Air Tractor’s assembly line. Dungan flies 802 #400, while veteran ag pilot Mike Ranspot sits behind the controls of the other AT-802. Operations manager Travis Weston coordinates the spraying operations and also serves as truck driver and assists Dustin Reece and Nathan Foreman with loading and fueling. Back at the office, Christie LaRoche and Crystal Frasier round out the cast, handling the scheduling and billing. The crew stays busy treating wheat, corn, and soybeans, with much of the wheat and soybean work being fungicide application. Dungan also does some work spraying seed corn and cucumber

specialty crops. Starting in September and running into October, Dungan will do dry work with seed and cover crops of oats, radishes and rye grass. Heavy rains this spring delayed planting, so Dungan expected work to come fast and furious in the shortened season. “We were looking at a very busy year, a busy spraying season,” says Dungan. “With commodity prices of corn and soybeans up, we figured to treat a lot of acres with fungicide this year.” Mother nature has a way of changing farming plans, though. Summer months have been exceptionally dry in Indiana, with 90-degree heat, high humidity and little to no rainfall. The northeastern part of the state has been impacted most. In areas east of U.S. 31 and north of Kokomo in Wabash and Whitley counties, crops are experiencing extreme drought stress. So aerial spraying work has

been hit or miss, with some areas that received rain doing well, and other areas with crops doing poorly. Dungan has had plenty of good seasons over the years though, and as he expanded his business, Dungan moved up through the Air Tractor product line. From his AT-402s, he traded up to 502s and then 602s, and eventually made the switch to a pair of AT-802s for their speed and productivity. “The 802 works really well for us,” Dungan says. “With the long ferries we have, we can load up 800 gallons, ferry out, do 400 acres and come back. They are fast and they get in and get the work done.” Dungan has his pair of 802s set up with Satloc® M3s, variable/constant rate flow control, and flat-fan CP spray nozzles calibrated for fungicide work. In the cockpit, Garmin GPS and satellite radio give Dungan access to up-to-the

minute weather conditions and XM radio. The company utilizes AgSync aerial application software to manage their spray work. It will come as no surprise that the issues Dungan deals with in his part of Indiana are the same ones common to many aerial application operators. “Like many places now, we have a lot of people moving out to the country,” he says, “and they are not accustomed to the ag aviation business and having people flying over their homes. That’s another reason why the 802s are such a good fit for us. The five-bladed prop on the 802 is quiet, and the airplanes work very well in populated areas. We can send them with a full load, get into the field, and get the work done quickly and quietly.” Dungan’s decision in 2009 to replace his pair of two-year-old AT-602s with one new AT-802 was based purely on maximizing business opportunities. “We have such a short season up here we have to be as productive as we can possibly be,” he says. As for adapting to the AT-802 from his previous airplanes, Dungan says, “The ‘802s are a little heavier than the 402 and 502 series – the controls are a little heavier, it’s just a bigger airplane – but after only about 20 hours I was very comfortable. That’s why we bought another one, I liked it so well.” At an IAAA Operation SAFE fly-in that

From left to right, Nathan Foreman, Dustin Reese, Jeff Dungan, Travis Weston.

he hosted in June at the Connersville airport, Dungan says he was pleased with the swath pattern test for his 802 flying at 180 MPH, covering a 90-foot swath at two GPA. At that speed the aircraft is very productive, he says. “We can cover a lot of acres in a day, even with the long ferries.” He says he sprays two gallons for fungicide work. A taxi-through loading hanger at his Knox satellite base lets Dungan save time on the ground by loading fuel and

the 800-gallon hopper at the same station. And when they’re on the road, which is quite often, the Dungan Aerial Service crew works from a flatbed trailer equipped with a 3-inch load system and tanks for refueling. Even after the season wraps up in late fall, Dungan keeps his guys busy. To say Dungan runs a clean operation is an understatement; he runs an immaculate operation. Over the winter months, Travis Weston, Dustin Reece and Nathan

Foreman will clean and polish the two 802 aircraft – even polishing the inside of the fuselage panels. Annuals and maintenance follow, and then the crew begins the same methodical, comprehensive process for the trucks, trailers, tanks, pumps and the rest of the equipment. This level of effort shouldn’t be surprising though, because his aircraft and support equipment are Dungan’s livelihood. And Jeff Dungan is in it for the long haul.

Thrush Aircraft do Brasil hosts Open House ALBANY, GA – Thrush Aircraft’s Brazilian partnership, Thrush Aircraft do Brasil, hosted an exclusive Open House event on Saturday, September 10, 2011. Thrush do Brasil began servicing customers in Anapolis, Brazil on July 13, 2011 with factory authorized sales and support for Thrush operators. The Thrush do Brazil open house coincides perfectly in celebrating the recently certified Thrush 510P by the Brazilian Civil Aviation Authority (ANAC) for commercial operations in Brazil. Jim Cable, president of Thrush Aircraft do Brasil, and his staff will serve Thrush owners and operators throughout Brazil with sales, service, training and support. During the open house, guests were provided a full tour of the facilities and an opportunity to meet the staff of Thrush do Brasil. Guests got an up-close look at the Thrush 510P dual cockpit and, in some cases, were able to take a seat at the controls.

Payne Hughes, Thrush Aircraft’s president, was on hand for the open house, “I believe that in today’s agriculture aircraft industry it is vital to have a local, full service operation in your global markets. Establishing Thrush Aircraft do Brasil was one of my top priorities in order to provide Brazil with a very compatible service to meet the demands of our Thrush operators. I am so excited to be here today with Jim to celebrate this milestone and opening of Thrush Aircraft do Brasil.” With the 510P certification and in-country factory authorized sales and service network, Thrush is certain to expand in Brazil’s rapidly growing agriculture aviation market. Multiple deliveries are scheduled to Brazil in the coming weeks for the upcoming spray season. Headquartered in Albany, Georgia, Thrush Aircraft manufactures a full range of aerial application aircraft

Prepare your financial plan using cash flow With the global economic uncertainties, it becomes a challenge preparing a plan for survival in upcoming years. The next several years could be critical.

The importance of cash flow is apparent from the mess faced by many families, companies, and even governments. However, preparing a sound financial plan requires the projection of cash flow. The key to survival is meeting the cash flow requirements of your business. For the commercial aircraft operator, this means evaluating the financials of each aircraft in the operation. Concentrate on your cash flow and the calculation of Return on Investment (ROI). Prepare

budgets and financial plans for each aircraft in your fleet. How? Tabulate and review the expenses on each aircraft over the last several years. Determine the expense categories that are appropriate for your operation. Separate the aircraft expense categories into annual fixed expenses, variable expenses that vary with flying hours and extraordinary expenses that don’t occur every year. Prorate each expense and assign an annual fixed or variable hourly expense amount as appropriate in order to estimate future expenses. Identify any large upcoming cash requirements or expenses (aircraft improvements, overhauls, special inspections, etc.) for each aircraft. Project the normal annual fixed expenses as well as the hourly operating expenses. Be especially careful to

adjust expenses that might change significantly. Examples could be fuel prices and out-of-warranty maintenance on older aircraft. Evaluate the revenue that each aircraft has produced. Use the expenses and revenues to determine the current ROI. If the revenues did not exceed the expenses, then determine what annual utilization and hourly revenue rate is required to achieve the ROI desired. After your thorough review, determine the average expenses, utilization, and revenue rate to use in projecting the after-tax cash flow and ROI for the next five years. Make sure you include all items affecting your cash flow. To produce one aircraft cash flow requires making many assumptions and estimates. You can create a general spreadsheet for this cash flow so that

individual assumptions can be changed, then the ROI impact can be seen immediately when you change an input. After completing this spreadsheet, use the “Goal Seek” feature of Microsoft Excel to iterate on individual expenses, revenue rates, or annual utilizations until the NPV (Net Present Value) of your net cash flow is zero (using your desired ROI as the discount rate in the NPV formula). The hours spent evaluating different scenarios will assist you in making profitable decisions concerning your business. You will know what must be achieved by your business to survive. How does your hourly rate compare to the competition? Is it possible to charge the hourly rate required to achieve your ROI? If not, what input assumptions must be changed to achieve your ROI? A spreadsheet allows you to change variables and evaluate many possibilities. AircraftCostAnalysis performs the analysis we have discussed. It will save you many hours of building and checking the math in your own spreadsheet. See www. AircraftCostAnalysis.com for the details.

NAAA holds fall board meeting in Greensboro, North Carolina The 2011 fall NAAA board of directors meeting was held October 7-9 at the Sheraton Four Seasons Hotel and Koury Convention Center in Greensboro, North Carolina. President Rick Richter (CA) presided. The venue also included meetings of the WNAAA, the National Agricultural Aviation Research and Education Foundation (NAAREF) and the 2011-2012 Leadership Training Class. After a series of committee meetings held on Friday and Saturday, reports from the committees were presented to the board members Saturday afternoon.

Rucker (KS), William O. Marsh Safety / Robert McCurdy (LA) and Outstanding Service / Rod Thomas (ID) and Carolyn Baeker (AZ).

communications Gaylon Stamps (TX) gave a Power Point presentation for the Communications committee where he reported the communications survey results. Three hundred twenty-two responded to the emailed survey. Of those, 49% were operators, 25% were pilots, 85% were over 45 years old, 96% used the Net, 25% wanted more digital content and 99% read AgAir Update. The membership placed the most value on NAAA’s Agricultural Aviation magazine over all other communication methods. Overwhelmingly, 95% were satisfied with the Fly Safe program distributed during the flying season. Stamps also stated the tower stuffers would be available through 2011.

convention Bob Bailey’s (TX) Convention committee report advised the board members the room reservations for the 2011 Hilton convention host hotel were higher than this time last year for Savannah reservations. The NAAA has met its room block commitment to the hotel. Auction items donations have topped $140,000 in value. These items included two Hot Section Inspections (HSIs) from P&WC, as well as a newly overhauled R-985 engine from Tulsa Aircraft Engines. Other notable auction items include a Wayne Handley agrobatics course, a P-51D Mustang ride by Tim McPherson, ground adjustable pump fan and brake from Lane Aviation, $15,000 gift certificate toward an engine overhaul from Covington Aircraft Engines and a P-40 Corsair ride from Fighters & Legends, LLC. Several other lesser value items have also been donated. Bailey noted the 2012 convention will return to Savannah. New doors for the convention center should be installed before that time. The doors will be 40 feet wide and allow for larger models of ag aircraft to fit inside the convention center. The 2013 convention will be held

in Reno, 2014 convention’s location has yet to be determined and the convention site will be Savannah in 2015.

long range planning Rod Thomas (ID) explained in his Long Range Planning committee report the primary focus of discussion was a need for a dues restructuring. He explained how the ongoing consolidation of agoperations was reducing the number of NAAA operator members. One idea the committee discussed was structuring the dues amount to reflect the number of aircraft used in an operation. An example of company consolidation is chemical company Wilbur-Ellis operating as one 43 ag-aircraft company. Thomas asked the board members for suggestions on how to address this problem of a shrinking membership with hopes he would have something to present to the membership in Las Vegas in December and be able to move forward with a change by the 2012 spring board of directors meeting in Washington, DC. Brent Short (AR) gave the membership report remarking that membership was up by 38% compared to 10 years ago. The total number of members, including all categories, was 1,724 as

of September 24, 2011. August 2011 the total membership number was 1,706 compared to 1,624 the same time in 2010. As of September 24, 2011, membership category numbers stood as follows: Operator/749, Affiliated Operator/42, Partnering Operator/1, Pilot/435, Pilot Graduating/34, Partnering Pilot/2, Allied/180, Affiliated Allied/35, Associate/130, International/33, States/35 and WNAAA/48. Notably, the total membership number in December 2001 was 1,235. The largest increase since then is the Pilot membership category which went from 203 to 435 as of 9/24/2011, more than a 100%. Short continued his report with comments about the success of the BASF scholarship program. Tough choices were made from multiple, excellent applicants for the second 2011 NAAA/BASF Agricultural Aviation Scholarships. BASF has committed to sponsor scholarships for three years. It provides for a $5,000 and a $2,500 scholarship. The scholarships are to be used for flight training directly related to agaviation, participation in an ag-aviation

apprentice program or ag-aviation coursework at a college or university. To better evaluate the applicants, five points were used by the selection committee; need, prior experience, retention within the industry, both the operator’s and applicant’s letters and accomplishments to date.

museum Drew Keahey (LA) gave the Museum committee report noting that at some point a replacement item for the Harold Miller’s helmet auction would be needed. Presently, Wayne Handley donates his agrobatics course, but has indicated he will be retiring in the future. Keahey continued by telling board members a woman from Texas had three ag-aircraft she would like to donate but at the time there is no space at the National Agricultural Aviation Museum in Jackson, Mississippi. The committee is considering other potential museum locations. He also requested NAA Hall of Fame recipients be listed in the annual NAAA membership directory. Brian Rau (ND) presented the nominations for next year’s executive team; Mark Hartz (AR) president, Leif Issacson (ID) vice-president, Kyle Scott

research & technology Dave Eby’s (IN), Research and Technology committee, reported NAAA will sponsor four individuals from USDA Agricultural Research Station (ARS) in College Station to attend the 2011 convention, pending approval by the USDA-ARS. ARS funding has been significantly reduced. Its work is considered to improve agricultural aviation. Sponsorship is one way to help continue the research. Two ARS representatives will also be sponsored to attend the board of directors meetings held in fall and spring. Eby explained the success of the Driftwatch Online Project, an Internetbased application developed by Purdue University that allows Indiana operators to view crops that have been planted adjacent and nearby an intended application site. The cost to expand this program is approximately $100,000 per state. Efforts are being made to ask chemical companies to help bring this service to other states.

Eby advised the board members of the two webinars hosted by Dr. Dennis Gardisser this past summer. Each webinar was attended by about 25 people who were able to view in real time, while online, a training session by Gardisser. The one-hour session was about effectively applying cover crops by air. Gardisser is considering launching other training sessions by Internet. Another topic of discussion in the Research & Technology meeting included a proposed trip to Brazil in the fall of 2012. Alan McCracken, who has travelled extensively in Brazil working with operators and their application equipment, has been consulted about the trip. Several Brazilian operators have agreed to host the group. It was noted the group will be limited to a small number of NAAA members. Two other items discussed in Research & Technology were night vision googles (NVGs) and unmanned aircraft vehicles (UAVs). Bruce Hubler is evaluating a set of NVGs for use in an ag-aircraft and will report on their viability to use them in ag-operations. An NVG company is scheduled to

exhibit at this year’s NAAA convention. The NAAA office has been contacted for an industry opinion about UAVs and how they would fit in the ag-aviation environment. The committee felt that as some point in the future there may be UAVs used in ag-spraying, but at the time the technology is not such for it to be a viable option. Ron Cline (WA) reported from the Safety & Federal Aviation Regulations committee meeting to date there have been 84 ag-aviation related accidents with seven fatalities. Notably, for

whatever reasons, six accidents each were in Montana and Washington state. Three of the Washington accidents with one fatality involved cherry drying which the committee felt should not be considered a Part 137 operation and therefore not be in the accident/fatality tally.

The offices are slightly further from Capitol Hill and closer to EPA offices than the current offices of NAAA. After going into executive session, the 2011 fall NAAA board of directors meeting adjourned Saturday afternoon, October 9.

NAAREF Rod Thomas (ID) reported on recent NAAREF activities. These included an update on new Professional Aerial Applicators Safety Support (PAASS) training modules. Several new PAASS presenters have been trained. Future module items would include a different way to examine stall spin accidents, medical issues and drift mitigation. Thomas reported the BASF-sponsored Operation Safe analyst training program in La Junta, Colorado graduated 13 new analysts. Thomas told the board members a new “Pilot Response” video would be available in November. The video has been tailored from the first responder video developed in California. Every

Part 137 operator will receive a complimentary video. Bulk purchase of the video will be available. It was strongly suggested that operators view the video with local first responders to help avoid leaving unnecessarily a pilot in an accident aircraft.

WNAAA Kathy Diehl (KS) reported to the Board its activities of the WNAAA. A new Athena presenter has been selected, Erin Morse from Washington State. New officer nominations are Kathy Diehl for president, Pat Stamps (TX) vice-president, Erin Morse treasurer and Leslie Craft (NC) secretary. Diehl said the women’s booth at the convention in Las Vegas would have Mary Coleman-Woolslayer signing her book, “A Biplane and His Boy”. Part of the silent auction would include a piece of the Daytona 500 race track. Next year’s scholarship essay title is “Stewards of the sky, stewards of the land - Environmental awareness and agricultural aviation”.

Frederick E. Tilton, M.D. FAA Federal Air Surgeon

aeromedical advisory

I can see clearly now… According to our records, about 55 percent of civilian pilots use some form of vision correction. While most of these pilots use glasses or contact lenses, a growing number are opting for laser eye surgery. In most cases these surgeries have good outcomes, but you should be aware that they can have side effects that could create a problem for your medical certification. As the technology improves, and with proper patient selection, potential side effects have decreased in severity and occurrence rate, but they still exist.

Advances in laser eye surgery There is no question that the technology for laser eye surgery has improved since it was first approved by the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) in 1995. The complication rate is less, and the resulting visual acuity is typically better than with earlier methods. The range of available procedures has also increased. However, they all include laser

resurfacing procedures, which change the optics of the front of the eye, and the way light rays focus on the retina to form an image in the brain. Some recent technical improvements include: faster lasers, better methods of application and eye tracking, laser flap incisions, and wavefront optimized procedures. Wavefront technology maps eye optics in three dimensions, which can reduce some of the downsides of laser refractive surgery, including contrast sensitivity loss, problems with night vision, and halos. Some patients can even achieve “super vision,” i.e., better than 20/20 vision. Patient selection is extremely important; some people’s eyes are predisposed to problems that could impact which procedure, if any, is

selected. Individuals at risk include those with thin corneas, dry eyes, inflammatory conditions, and glaucoma, among others. Keep in mind that with laser eye surgery there are a number of possible complications and adverse effects, many of which are listed in our Information for Pilots Considering Laser Eye Surgery brochure www.faa.gov/pilots/safety/ pilotsafetybrochures/media/LaserEye_ II.pdf.

What about my medical? The FAA requires that civil airmen with refractive surgical procedures discontinue flying until their eye care specialist has determined that their vision is stable, and that there are no significant adverse effects or complications. The healing should be sufficient that frequent eye drops are no longer required and the quality of vision is good. The airman should submit one of two documents to the FAA: A report from the eye care specialist or FAA form 8500-7, Report of Eye Evaluation. (NOTE: The FAA would prefer FAA form 8500-7 because it indicates all the eye information we would need to process a physical examination.) These reports can be submitted directly to the Aerospace

Medical Certification Division or your Regional Flight Surgeon office when you are released from care, or to the Aviation Medical Examiner during your next flight physical. If you are a pilot contemplating refractive surgery, consult an eye care specialist to determine if you are a good candidate for laser refractive surgery. Although the FAA and most major air carriers allow laser refractive surgery, professional aviators should consider how it could affect their occupational and certification status. As with any invasive procedure, there are many variables that can influence the final outcome. You should understand all the risks as well as the benefits before electing to have a procedure performed that could compromise your visual performance in the cockpit. Frederick E. Tilton, M.D., M.P.H., received both an M.S. and an M.D. degree from the University of New Mexico and an M.P.H. from the University of Texas. During a 26-year career with the U.S. Air Force, Dr. Tilton logged more than 4,000 hours as a command pilot and senior flight surgeon flying a variety of aircraft. He currently flies the Cessna Citation 560 XL.

comments • Crop Duster - that’s the only name everybody knows, even other pilots. • We need to get as far away from the term “crop duster” as possible. • I prefer aerial applicator with one exception, you always have to explain to a person what it is. With the other terms, they seem to know. • Ag pilot, (but, I like crop duster too). The words “crop duster” should never be forgotten. • After almost forty years of being a ag pilot, aerial applicator and spray pilot

I’m the only one that knows it is me. Everyone knows a crop duster. • Anything but “that evil guy poisoning our children” is fine with me. • Ag pilot or crop duster. • Both are good. • Definitely despise the term crop duster. • Aerial applicator - It denotes more professionalism. We help provide food for the country. Some of the names seem to be tied to the barnstormer thinking. • Everyone knows ‘crop duster’, say ag-pilot and they look at you and ask, what’s that? • Aerial applicator is good, but sometimes people don’t know what you’re referring to. Everyone knows crop duster ! • When you use the other terms people

looked confused and they ask what is that? • When you say “crop duster” they get it!! • I do not like “crop duster.” It’s anachronistic and conjures up visions of that idiot in the movie “Independence Day.” Although I prefer “ag pilot” any of the other options, except for “crop duster,” are perfectly fine. We are professional pilots. • Aerial applicator, second choice would be ag pilot. They sound a little more professional than the other two. • I feel I can call myself a crop duster, because I have applied dust. Pilots that haven’t, can only be called spray pilots. • Ag pilot, preferably with no expletives. • Crop duster, because everyone knows

what that is. I have never had any bad comments when I say I’m a crop duster. • Keep it simple and the uninitiated don’t feel as if they’re being corrected when you counter them saying “crop duster” with “ag pilot”. We know what they mean, so we can leave it at that. You can always mention, as you usually do, that “We don’t actually ‘dust’ much anymore. We spray these days like’s done on peoples’ lawns.” • Ag pilot, that was easy. • Ag pilot, my second choice would be Spray pilot. • When I was younger I would correct anyone that did not call us ag pilots........As I have gotten older I have learned to embrace crop duster, aerial applicator and spray pilot.

It is still ‘all about air’ by Bill Lavender This past summer Thrush Aircraft, Inc. and Cascade Aircraft Conversions, LLC agreed to evaluate the Cascade Pressure Cowling installed on a new 510P Thrush. Mid-Continent Aircraft Corp. installed the pressure cowling at its facility in Hayti, Missouri. MidContinent Aircraft Corp. is Cascade Aircraft Conversions’ largest dealer and stocks the Cascade Pressure Cowling. It is an STC’d add-on option for Thrush and Air Tractor aircraft. Before the installation, factory test pilot, Jody Bays, Thrush Aircraft, Inc. vice president and Dennie Stokes, MidContinent Aircraft Corp. vice-president and pilot/operator, flew the aircraft in its original factory configuration then subsequently with the Cascade Pressure Cowl installed. During these flights, notes were taken for comparative purposes. A manometer was installed on the aircraft between the filter medium and the engine for both installations. Along with its readings, an MVP-50 digital engine and systems monitor, airspeed indicator, outside air temperature gauge and altimeter were used to gather comparative data. The MVP-50 recorded Ng (gas generator speed), prop RPM, engine torque, ITT (internal turbine temperature) and fuel flow. However, the fuel flow output had not been calibrated and that data was not used. The tests were flown at a pressure altitude of 1,000 feet with the altimeter set to 29.92. The propeller was set at 2,000 RPM. The flights were made with full fuel and a full hopper, using torque to obtain the target airspeed beginning at 120 MPH, in increments of 10 MPH, up to 150 MPH. Despite every effort to duplicate the parameters of the comparative flights, a couple of issues occurred that affected the outcome of the data. The average outside air temperature was warmer by approximately 8°C (13°F) for the factory Thrush flights compared to the Cascade Pressure Cowl installation flights. The pressure altitude of 1,000 feet did not account for ground effect where most applications are made and the fuel flow function of the MVP-50 was not calibrated. Apart from these issues, several facts and observations did emerge from the evaluation flights.

The Cascade Pressure Cowl installed on a new 510P Thrush. The installation was made by Cascade Aircraft Conversions dealer, Mid-Continent Aircraft Corp., in Hayti, Missouri.

Interestingly, the in-flight manometer readings for the factory Thrush ranged from -6.96 (inches of H2O column) to -4.12, while the Cascade Pressure Cowl manometer readings ranged from +9.16 to +13.56. This indicates a positive air flow for the Cascade Pressure Cowl at any point from start up throughout the airspeed range. When the factory cowling installation measurements were taken at 125 MPH, it had a manometer reading of -4.12 using 44 psi torque and 95.2% Ng with the ITT at 672°C. The OAT was 26°C. At 136 MPH, the manometer measured

-4.40 with a torque setting of 49.8 psi, an Ng of 97.1% and an ITT of 700°C. Comparatively, with the Cascade Pressure Cowling, at 120 MPH the manometer measured +9.30 using 46 psi and 94% Ng with the ITT at 652°C. The OAT was 22°C. When the torque was increased to 51 psi to obtain 130 MPH, the manometer measurement was +10.80, 95.6% Ng and an ITT of 678°C. For higher airspeed, with the factory inlet aircraft at 146 MPH, the manometer reading was -4.62 using a torque setting of 52.1 psi and 98.1%

Ng with an ITT of 716°C. To reach 157 MPH, the torque was increased to 60.4 psi. The manometer measured -4.99, while the Ng was 100.8% with an ITT of 759°C. At approximately 150 MPH, the Cascade Pressure Cowling installation required 64.5 psi with an Ng of 100.1% and an ITT of 748°C. So, what does all this data mean? With the Cascade Pressure Cowling, it is taking more torque to obtain the desired airspeed. However, the engine is developing this extra torque with less Ng and ITT. It also implies there is a difference in the drag effect of the inlets at a higher airspeed.. Based on firsthand experience and testimonial from Dennie Stokes, the Cascade Pressure Cowling excels on hot days of more than 30°C (86°F). Probably, it also is a vast improvement in engine performance when replacing older Thrush model inlets, such as those with the Donaldson air separator filter systems. Dennie Stokes is vice-president of Mid-Continent Aircraft Corp., which solely owns and operates Stokes Flying Service. The company has a 2009 510P Thrush in its fleet of aircraft.

After one season with the factory inlet, Dennie installed a Cascade Pressure Cowling on the ‘09 Thrush. The immediate effect was being able to reach torque limits before reaching Ng limits on a hot day during takeoff. Before the Cascade Pressure Cowl was installed the aircraft was limited by its engine’s Ng. “There is no doubt about it. With the test aircraft, as soon as I moved the prop out of feather, the manometer reading climbed to +7.56. As the prop RPM increased, you could see the manometer reading increase.

“With our 2009 Thrush and its Cascade Pressure Cowl, we are developing less ITT and more torque. We typically operate at cruise torque seeing a 30°C reduction in ITT, which is significant to me. With the ‘09 model, all the numbers across the board are better. Before the conversion, we could not make full torque when the OAT climbed above 95°F (35°C) without fear of going above redline Ng. Now, we can make full torque while at lower Ng and ITT readings. This means a shorter takeoff run. With a lower Ng for a given torque, your power turbine is not working as hard. This buys time for your engine, no ifs, ands, or buts about it.“ Dennie continues, “If an operator will evaluate the data honestly and fairly, he will understand torque can be made (with the Cascade Pressure Cowling) under any conditions, whereas before it could not be. It takes horsepower to make the airplane fly and torque is horsepower. “As for airspeed, I can’t really tell if there is any measurable difference. Mike Ewing (a Stokes Flying Service pilot) flew our ‘09 Thrush before the conversion and all of last year with it. He said that he may have lost a MPH or two, but to him that is insignificant compared to the power he can now make, especially on takeoff. Tracey (Stokes) and I have been defoliating cotton and salting rice this fall and continue to be impressed with the performance we are getting from our ‘09 Thrush with the Cascade Pressure Cowling. “The one thing that is just undeniable is the performance (with the Cascade Pressure Cowling). You are making less ITT and less Ng at max torque, which is buying you time on your engine, while at the same time providing you with the performance. If you make a living in that airplane you need the performance. To get the performance, you have got to make power and the only way to make power is have some way for that engine to get plenty of air.” Dennie adds these comments in closing, “In my opinion, from the Ng data, it is definitely lower with the Cascade Pressure Cowl and that allows you to make the power with torque. hands-on flying

Skeeter busters Del Boyd says he’s spoiled rotten. After Oroville, California, I can see why. spending a couple of hours with him at As a former ag-pilot, turned charter the Butte County Mosquito and Vector operator, turned mosquito buster, Del Control District (BCMVCD) hangar Boyd is the only pilot on staff for an HardyAvIns_AgAirUpdate_38Pg_Color_04 10/2/09 10:31 AM Page 1 on the Oroville Municipal Airport in operation that sprays two hundred

thousand acres a year. Del is quick to point out that given the normal swath width of five hundred forty-two feet and the ultra low volume rate applied, the accumulated acres aren’t quite as staggering as first glance would have them be. “Our busy season is June through November. I fly about two hundred and fifty hours a year, sometimes more, sometimes less.” He said, “I’ll cover about a hundred and thirteen acres a minute in the equipment we have,” says Del. Talk about equipment - the BCMVCD’s hangar is home to three Ag Cats. Two early model Ag Cats each with R985s and a turbine Super B with a PT6A-15 on the nose. Each aircraft is configured for different missions, so there’s no swapping application gear; he just hops in the airplane that is set up for what

needs to be done. One of the round engine early models is the “night ship” which is configured to spray adulticides at night. (That’s right… a round engine at night.) A typical night mission will have him flying at 200’ AGL and a pass several miles in length. The aircraft is equipped with a state of the art integrated Ag Nav and Flight Master System that operates from an AIMMS 20 meteorological probe affixed under the left lower wing. The system senses the weather conditions, accounts for probable drift, the effects of air density and enough other stuff as to make it to far above my brain to comprehend, much less accurately describe. Del explained that there are times when he might fly a particular job and never actually fly directly over the field he is spraying.

get tall enough to block the water from effective liquid applications. The queen of the nest however has to be the turbine Super B. This aircraft is used primarily for liquid larvacide applications. The normal spray system has been removed and replaced with a scaled down, simplified system that is more economical and fits the unique operational environment of low volume, highly corrosive material being loaded and applied. When flying on rice fields, Del is always on the lookout for other ag pilots. His work will sometimes conflict with that of local aerial applicators. The unwritten rule is that if an ag pilot sees the orange and white “Skeeter Buster Bird”, he only needs to circle the field and Del will bug out long enough to allow the other pilot to get into do his work. Mosquito abatement is a community health operation, so the department has no restrictions when it comes to property lines or ownership. If the field technicians identify rice fields or any other property that contains threshold levels of mosquitoes or larvae, the job is set up and the trigger pulled. When working adjacent to other counties, the BCMVCD will call the

neighboring operation and coordinate their applications in order to enhance the effectiveness of the work in the area being treated. Most states and counties have some sort of mosquito abatement program. They’ve been around since the early 1900s when malaria was a prevalent disease and the mosquito population was unchecked. Imagine an area like Butte County, California with a hundred thousand acres of rice land and over seventy thousand acres of wetlands. It’s prime mosquito habitat. Back then, mosquitoes would sometimes rise up in dark, insidious clouds, enveloping large areas and even small towns, feeding on anything with a heartbeat. They would run people from their fields, shut down businesses and even drive livestock mad. Many aerial application operations contract to their local county mosquito abatement offices to provide aerial spraying services in remote areas. It is a necessary job, one that is beneficial to all involved. It is just one more way that aerial applicators are benefiting their communities and performing a vital service for humanity.

Lighting Up the World...

Q & A with Question: I am thinking about elective corrective vision surgery. How does this affect my medical certificate? Does it matter which form of surgery is used?

...one Runway or Taxiway at a Time. Solar LED Markers from BrightPortal

BrightPortal Resources, LLC Tim Cowsert tcowsert@sbcglobal.net 2003 Avenue G • Danbury, TX 77534 www.brightportalresources.com 979/270-1655

Answer: There are several different “corrective visiontype” surgical procedures. I am going to make an educated guess that you are considering surgery to correct

for refractive errors of your eye. These are surgical procedures to reshape the cornea of the eye, with the ultimate goal of not having to wear eye glasses. The FAA does grant medical certification to airmen with these procedures. A list of the approved surgeries and our policy guidance can be found at the following URL address: www.faa.gov/about/ office_org/headquarters_offices/avs/ offices/aam/ame/guide/app_process/ exam_tech/et/31-34/rp/ The pilot is grounded until the procedure has been performed, and the pilot cannot return to flying until he or she meets the vision standards for the class of medical certificate required. Also, note that some types of procedures have a mandatory period of grounding that can last from 3 to 6 months. You need to search the Aeromedical Certification portion of the Online Guide for Aviation Medical Examiners (www.faa.gov/about/ office_org/headquarters_offices/avs/ offices/aam/ame/guide/) for the other corrective surgical procedures. You should also be aware that these procedures can result in complications (e.g., varying vision acuity, glare, and haloes) that could result in your losing your medical certification.

Question: I have been diagnosed with epilepsy (grand mal or clonic-tonic). My last episode was in August 1992. What obstacles would I face if I pursued a pilot’s license?

Answer: The FAA’s policy for epilepsy is that you must be seizure-free for ten years and off all anti-seizure medications for three consecutive years. You will need to provide us with a good report that relates your entire history of epilepsy. It should include a description of the seizure, the treatments you were given, exactly when the last seizure you had occurred, the date when the medication was discontinued, and a current sleepdeprived EEG. We may request other evaluations and testing depending on your history.

Bogus drift claim In 1999 I was flying on a Boll Weevil Eradication contract in the central part of Louisiana for the University of Louisiana at Monroe. At that time, I was the chief pilot for ULM and assistant professor teaching ag aviation when three men claimed to have had malathion drifted on them from my airplane. The claim was pure bogus and I wanted to go to court over it. However, ULM did not want the publicity from it and agreed to pay a $1,000.00 fine, thus resolving the matter. Last week, I received a letter from the LA Dept. of Agriculture demanding $1,000.00 from me, over nine years after the incident! This was my response to them:

Dear Sir: This claim against me is bogus, trivial and spurious and that’s being kind! Please consider the following: 1. The incident happened nine years ago. Why am I just now hearing of this claim against me? Doesn’t the statute of limitations apply here? 2. The matter was supposed to have been settled (against my wishes) by the University of Louisiana, my employer. Apparently, they did not pay the fine, or it was not recorded. 3. Malathion, the product being dispensed for the control of the boll weevil, has an LD-50 number in the thousands. “The name LD-50 comes from toxicology, the study of poisons. It is an abbreviation

for “Lethal Dose, 50%” or median lethal dose. It gives the amount of the substance required (usually per body weight) to kill 50% of the test population. It is slightly toxic via the dermal route, with reported dermal LD-50 values of greater than 4000 mg/kg). In my opinion, these three men were lying through their teeth. They know it, the lawyer that they talked to knows it and the Dept. of Agriculture should know it. 4. On the day of this alleged drift claim, the wind was out of the north, as proven by the nearest weather reporting station, Alexandria, Louisiana, along with the fact I had laid down a smoke marker, like I always did when there

were people, buildings, etc. in the neighborhood. I sprayed the field north and south, beginning on the west side of the field working towards the east. Two of the men were standing in a garden aligned with the south border of the field. The third man was in a shed north of the garden. I never saw him, but all three men were at least 50 yards away from the field being sprayed. 5. I was later told that all of the clothes the men were wearing had been burned at the hospital. Interesting. I wonder why this was done. 6. During the mid-70s in the spring one year, when I lived in Mississippi, I was commissioned to spray the little town of Duck Hill, Mississippi for mosquitoes. I sprayed the town with malathion! To my knowledge, in the seven active years of the Boll Weevil Eradication Program, BWEP, using malathion, no one has become sick from exposure to it. Even if the men did have malathion drift on them, why didn’t they just wash it off?

Sir, I respectfully request your most serious consideration of the above mentioned reasons why this demand of $1,000.00 for the alleged drift claim be dismissed. Sincerely, Robert A. McCurdy As of to date, I have not heard from the Mississippi Department of Agriculture. I have consulted a lawyer and his advice was simply to say the ball is now in their court - wait and see. Maybe it’ll take the Department of Ag another nine years to act. So what is this little dissertation all about? It gives me a chance to let off a little steam and In My Opinion, you should be prepared to take a stand when you know you are in the right. And so, as per always, be safe, have fun, and make money.

wing and a prayer

Carlin Lawrence carlin@agairupdate.com

Walking away from God’s grace God told Jeremiah, “Do not pray for this people nor offer any plea or petition for them; do not plead with Me, for I will not listen to you….Do not pray for this people nor offer any plea or petition for them, because I will not listen when they call to Me in the time of their distress….Do not pray for the well-being of this people” (Jeremiah 7:16, 11:14, 14:11). The nation of Judah was going through a great crisis at this time. They were in a very severe drought. Their water wells had gone dry. The farmers could not plow the fields because of the lack of rain; the ground was too dry and hard to get a plow into the ground and they couldn’t plant their crops. The deer would forsake their young because there was no

grass. The donkeys were trying to catch a scent of food, but there was no food for them (Jeremiah 14:1-6). The Bible teaches that these things are often God’s judgment upon a people and nation who are willfully disobeying God. And many times what is referred to as “acts of God” are things that God has allowed in nature to bring people to the realization that we need to turn our lives and nation over to God once again. God does allow national catastrophes in order to awaken people to their need of dependence upon Him. The reason for all of these problems was, “They greatly love to wander; they do not restrain their feet. So the Lord does not accept them; He will now

remember their wickedness and punish them for their sins” (Jeremiah 14:10). They still believed in and acknowledged God, but they would not remain true to God; the gods of materialism, power, and pleasure had been enthroned in their lives. God still had a place in their lives, but it was not first place. He wasn’t the God that they served. It is a sad and tragic situation for a nation or a person when God says He will not hear their prayers anymore. God said to Noah, “My Spirit will not always strive with man.” There is a blessing and there is a curse in that statement. The blessing is that God’s Spirit does strive with man, God is not willing that any should perish, but that all

should come to repentance (2 Peter 3:9). And so God sends His Spirit to strive with man, to turn away a person from a sinful and destructive path. But the curse is that there can come a day when God will withdraw His Spirit and God will say, “Alright, that’s enough.” That’s what God did to Saul, the first king of Israel because of his disobedience. God sent King Saul and his army to destroy all the Amalekites and everything they owned. But Saul didn’t follow God’s orders and didn’t destroy everyone and everything. Because his disobedience God said to Saul: “Because you have rejected the Word of the Lord, He has also rejected you from being king.” The Babylonian army was about to

capture Jerusalem and Zedekiah asked Jeremiah what he should do. God told Jeremiah to tell Zedekiah to surrender to the Babylonian army and he and Jerusalem would be saved, but if he didn’t Jerusalem would be destroyed (Jeremiah 38:14-21). Zedekiah disobeyed the voice of the Lord because he was afraid that the Jews would kill him if he surrendered (Jeremiah 38:14-21). Because of Zedekiah’s disobedience Jerusalem was destroyed and Zedekiah was forced to watch his family being killed, and Zedekiah’s eyes were put out and he was taken to Babylon as a captive until he died (Jeremiah 39:1-8). Zedekiah was more afraid of man than he was of God; he didn’t trust in what God had told him to do. “The fear of man brings a snare, but whoever trusts in the Lord shall be safe” (Proverbs 29:25). God is very patient and long-suffering, but you can come to the place where God will say, “I give up.” And God will give you over to follow your own lusts and worldly desires. The Spirit of God will no longer strive with your heart. Paul said, “Therefore God gave them over in the sinful desires of their hearts…They exchanged the truth of God for a lie, and worshiped and served created things

rather than the Creator…Because of this, God gave them over to shameful lusts. Furthermore, since they did not think it worthwhile to retain the knowledge of God, he gave them over to a depraved mind, to do what ought not to be done” (Romans 1:24-28).

There is a time, we know not when, there is a line, we know not where, that marks the destiny of men between

after your own earthly wisdom. The Spirit of God will no longer strive to bring you into God’s kingdom. The door of God’s grace will not always be open. God owes us nothing, and He can close the door of salvation at any time He pleases and you can find yourself hopelessly forever on the outside of God’s grace and mercy. There is great danger in procrastination; God’s final call to you to accept His offer of salvation through faith in His Son Jesus Christ is always today. You can’t live in yesterday, and tomorrow never comes—it’s always today. “Behold, now is the accepted time;

behold, now is the day of salvation” (2 Corinthians 6:2). The Bible says, “It is appointed once to die, after this the judgment” (Hebrews 9:27). Jesus Christ will either be your Savior or He will be your judge—it’s your choice. “For God so loved the world that He gave His only begotten Son, that whoever believes in Him should not perish but have everlasting life” (John 3:16). Jesus Christ wants you in God’s heaven with Him for all eternity!

sorrow and despair. A Bible scholar wrote, “There is a time, we know not when, there is a line, we know not where, that marks the destiny of men between sorrow and despair. There is a line, though by man unseen, once it has been crossed, even God Himself, in all of His love, has sworn that all is lost.” God is very patient and longsuffering, but a person can come to the place where God will say, “Have it your way!” And God allow you to follow

Injuries: 1 Uninjured. On July 9, 2011 a Schweizer G-164B, encountered a ditch during an off airport forced landing following a

loss of engine power near Yuba City, California. The pilot was not injured; the airplane sustained substantial damage from impact forces. The local aerial application flight was departing from a private dirt strip. The pilot stated the airplane reached about 35 feet above ground level after takeoff when he heard a loud pop. He observed fire coming from both exhaust stacks, and the engine lost power. He landed on an adjacent road, but the airplane slid into a ditch alongside it. The landing gear sheared off, and the airplane nosed over. NTSB Identification: *CEN11CA495* Date: July 19, 2011 Location: Greenstown, IN Aircraft: CESSNA A188B

NTSB Identification: *CEN11CA497* Date: July 21, 2011 Location: North English, IA Aircraft: Grumman Schweizer G-164A, Injuries: 1 Uninjured. The pilot stated that he was attempting a landing into the sun with agricultural chemical on the windshield. He said that a sudden air burst pushed the airplane down, which resulted in a hard landing. The airplane then bounced and impacted the runway. The airplane sustained substantial damage to the fuselage. Weather reports for the area did not indicate the presence of weather that would have resulted in an air burst.

Aircraft: PIPER PA-36-375 Injuries: 1 Uninjured. The airplane departed from a runway with a slight uphill grade, for the first agricultural application flight of the day. The pilot reported that his acceleration was less than expected, and he lifted off near the departure end of the runway with minimum airspeed. The airplane failed to accelerate or climb, and struck terrain about 600 feet from the airport. The impact collapsed the landing gear and caused substantial damage to the airframe and elevator. The pilot reported that he inadvertently departed with the engine mixture control leaned at approx. the halfway setting. The pilot added there was no preimpact mechanical malfunction or failure with the airplane and that the accident could have been prevented if he had used the checklist.

“feel right.” He leveled off and stopped the turn. He lowered the collective and added full throttle. The pilot stated that the helicopter’s RPMs were in the bottom of the green arc. The helicopter began losing altitude and impacted tall corn. The pilot indicated that there were no mechanical malfunctions with the helicopter. The helicopter sustained substantial damage when the main rotor separated a section of its tailboom. NTSB Identification: *CEN11CA545* Date: July 28, 2011 Location: Forest City, IA Aircraft: AYRES CORPORATION S2R-G6 Injuries: 1 Uninjured. The agricultural pilot had completed a spray run and pulled up to clear trees at the end of the field. The pilot reported that several trees and windmills were located at the southern end of the field and as the airplane made a climbing left turn, the right wing struck a windmill blade. The collision tore the spray boom from the airplane, which then impacted the airplane’s right side stabilizer and fuselage, causing substantial damage. The pilot was able to perform a successful precautionary landing on a nearby gravel road.

NTSB Identification: *CEN11CA533* Date: July 31, Location: Rushford, MN Aircraft: Garlick Helicopters Inc OH-58C Injuries: 1 Uninjured. The pilot was flying an aerial application flight when the helicopter contacted a power line that ran perpendicular to the direction of the spray run. The pilot stated he was aware of the power line, but he became distracted by horses that were located near the field. The wire strike and ground impact resulted in substantial damage to the fuselage. NTSB Identification: *CEN11CA543* Date: August 03, Location: Washington, IA Aircraft: AERO COMMANDER S2R Injuries: 1 Uninjured. The pilot reported that the airplane’s engine stopped producing power during climb out after takeoff. noted during the examination that would explain the loss of engine power. NTSB Identification: *CEN11CA565* Date: August 10, 2011 Location: Bronson, IA Aircraft: WEATHERLY 201C Injuries: 1 Uninjured. The pilot reported that the airplane’s airspeed decayed when he maneuvered to avoid some high tension power lines while conducting an application pass. He leveled the wings and applied full engine power. The pilot turned further in an effort to avoid a populated area and toward a low point in the rising terrain. The pilot added that after exiting the agricultural field, the airplane entered a valley located between rolling hills, at which time the airplane started to sink. There was a tree that was going to be a conflict so the pilot attempted to dump the chemical load. The airplane’s right wing struck the tree and the airplane subsequently impacted the ground. The airplane sustained substantial damage to the right wing and fuselage. The pilot reported that there were no failures or malfunctions associated with the airplane prior to the accident.

NTSB Identification: *CEN11LA598* Date: August 14, 2011 Location: Edgeley, ND Aircraft: AIR TRACTOR INC AT-301 Injuries: 1 Uninjured. An Air Tractor AT-301 sustained substantial damage to its fuselage during a forced landing to a cornfield following a partial loss of engine power. The pilot was not injured. NTSB Identification: *WPR11LA386* Date: August 16, 2011 Location: Hardin, MT Aircraft: Air Tractor Inc AT-401 Injuries: 1 Uninjured. On August 16, 2011 an Air Tractor AT-401 lost engine power while maneuvering to spray a field and made a forced landing near Hardin, Montana. The commercial pilot, the sole occupant, was not injured. Visual meteorological conditions prevailed, and no flight plan was filed. According to the pilot, he had just taken off from a private airstrip when the engine quit. He heard a loud boom and saw fire coming out of the engine compartment. The pilot reported that the engine had a 100-hour inspection about a week before the accident. A Federal

Aviation Administration (FAA) inspector responded to the accident site and reported that the debris field consisted of fire damaged hay fields about 1 mile behind the main wreckage. A visual inspection of the engine revealed that the compressor section had sustained fire damage, and the turbine section had broken and missing vanes. NTSB Identification: *CEN11CA631* Date: August 16, 2011 Location: Ord, NE Aircraft: CESSNA A188 Injuries: 1 Uninjured. The pilot planned an aerial application flight and filled the airplane with fuel and grass seed. He reported that as he started a crosswind takeoff, he applied full rudder and aileron. As the airplane gained speed, it encountered turbulence from nearby buildings, and veered left. The pilot was unable to straighten the turn before the airplane exited the runway surface. Prior to coming to a stop, the airplane collided with a runway approach light and the left wing impacted the ground. An examination of the airplane revealed substantial damage to the left wing’s spar.

On August 26, 2011 a WSK PZL Mielec, M-18 Dromader impacted terrain after takeoff from runway 24 (5,504 feet by 100 feet) at the Albertus Airport, Freeport, Illinois. The pilot received serious injuries. NTSB Identification: *CEN11LA610* Date: August 29, 2011 Location: Monette, AR Aircraft: Grumman Schweizer G-164A Injuries: 1 Uninjured. A Grumman Aircraft G-164A experienced a partial loss of engine power shortly after takeoff from a private airstrip. The pilot subsequently made a forced landing to a field. The commercial pilot was not injured. The airplane sustained substantial damage to the fuselage and both wings. According to the pilot, after takeoff and when the airplane was approximately 150 feet above ground level, the engine lost partial power. Unable to maintain altitude, the pilot executed a forced landing to a cotton field. During the rollout the airplane nosed over and came to rest in an inverted position. The airplane was recovered for further examination.

15 Ipanemas, a few hundred thousand hectares and one customer by Bill Lavender During the years I owned a flying service, I once had a banker tell me that I needed to be continually upgrading my equipment. He told me I should figure the life of like kind equipment (in this case ag-aircraft) and to be on a continuing replacement program. This meant that, for example, if I had three aircraft and the lifespan of their use for my operation was six years, then I need to be replacing one of these aircraft every two years. I am glad the banker felt that way, since I was in his office for a loan to replace an aircraft. I am sure the above business scenario preys heavily on the minds of Joel Ivo Rosado and Julio Villela of AeroSafra in Goiania, Brazil. AeroSafra operates 15 Ipanemas. If the company planned to keep an aircraft as long as 15 years, that would require buying a replacement aircraft every year. From my visit to AeroSafra, I do not believe any of the aircraft were 15 years old.

AeroSafra started on a farm near Goiania in 1988 treating soybeans. The following year, the company expanded into Mineiros. Twelve years later, a big change came about the small agaviation company. SLC Agricola, Ltd. became its sole customer. SLC (www. slcagricola.com.br) is a huge agricultural company based in Porto Alegre, Brazil. In 2010 the company farmed over 230,000 hectares (568,000 acres). In 2014, the planting schedule calls for over 450,000 hectares (1.125 million acres) to be planted. In 2010, the company had gross revenues that exceeded $887 million reais ($554 million USD). AeroSafra only treats about two-thirds of SLC’s area. It bases its aircraft on six of SLC’s farms, each about 40,000 planted hectares (100,000 acres). Six aircraft are based in Mineiros and the rest are in the state of Mato Grosso. One aircraft serves as a a backup for the fleets, while two or three are based at each farm. AeroSafra employees 14 pilots.

Six of the Ipanemas’ engines use pure alcohol for fuel. The Ipanema is the only aircraft in the world with a Type Certificate to operate on pure alcohol. AeroSafra was the first company to operate the Type Certificated alcohol

fuel Ipanema. Two of the six aircraft are type-certificated for alcohol, while the other four were converted from av-gas to alcohol use. These six aircraft are based where alcohol is readily available and is a cost savings over av-gas.

An AeroSafra Ipanema returns from another spraying mission. Note the vast expanse of the fields.

The alcohol Ipanemas produce more power than their sister av-gas burners, but use more liters per hour. The alcohol Ipanemas burn about 90 liters (24 gallons) verses 70 liters (18.5 gallons) with av-gas in its Lycoming IO-540 engine. In mid-2010, alcohol cost AeroSafra $2 reais per liter ($4.73 USD per gallon) verses $4 reais per liter ($9.45 USD per gallon) for av-gas. This converts to $180 reais ($112.50 USD) per flight hour for alcohol verses $280 reais ($175 USD) per flight hour for av-gas. However, using alcohol, by Joel’s estimates, reduces the TBO of the engine from 2,000 hours to 1,600 hours. Lycoming, at this time, does not recognize alcohol as a fuel for its engines. Savings in fuel costs are

a consideration for using alcohol in AeroSafra’s Ipanemas, but as much so is the availability of a specific type of fuel. (Calculations made when the real was 1.6:1 to the USD) The primary airframe difference in the alcohol Ipanemas is its higher capacity fuel pump and special rubber components that are exposed to the alcohol. It also has a 38-liter (10 US gallon) auxiliary tank for av-gas that a small amount is needed to start the engine, then it is switched to alcohol. If needed, with an adjustment to the fuel pump, the alcohol aircraft can use avgas exclusively. With a fleet of 15 aircraft of the same make, set up to operate from different locations for different spray missions,

there are bound to be differences, as pointed out with six of these aircraft powered by alcohol fuel. Another difference is 10 are outfitted with STOL-brand rotary atomizers, a Brazilian company, with lowered booms. “Adding STOL rotary atomizers and lowering the booms has turned out to be a good change for the Ipanema. This has improved our spray pattern noticeably,” explains Joel. Application rates are typically 10 l/ha (1 GPA) and are mostly insecticide applications on cotton and some soybeans. As the Brazilian summer heat rises, so do the application rates, reaching a peak of 30 l/ha (3 GPA). The season starts in November and continues for nine months until the end of July. Very little spraying is done in the remaining months of the year. Liquid and granular urea fertilizers are also applied to the cotton. Over the years, Ipanema’s manufacturer, Neiva, produced different models of the aircraft, improving their performance each time. Currently, AeroSafra operates four 201As and eleven later model 202s with winglets . Three of the Ipanemas use the Trimble GPS unit, while the other 12 use the

SATLOC Lite GPS unit. At each of the six farms from where AeroSafra aircraft operate is a Centro Brasileiro de Bioaeronáutica (CBB) Descontaminador de Agrotóxicos. This is an ozone system for decontaminating any residual material left in the aircraft spray system and water from washing the aircraft.

As the Brazilian summer heat rises, so does the application rates The red dirt airstrips are typically 1,200 meters (4,000 feet) long with no wires and no trees nearby. Spray runs are 7-8 kilometers (4-5 miles) long. At each airstrip, careful attention is given to safety, particularly with extracting a pilot from an aircraft or injured ground personnel. Regular safety classes are given with the onsite paramedics and ambulance equipment. “Bill, one of my biggest problems is finding enough good, Brazilian pilots,” tells Joel. “It is not that the Brazilian

pilots are not good ag-pilots, they are. It is they start in ag-aviation to build time to be hired by the airlines. In Brazilian, there is a big demand for airline pilots with good pay and working conditions. Beginning pilots see ag-aviation as a way into an airline pilot’s career. AeroSafra pilots are required to either live on the farm where they are based, or nearby. Joel feels it is important for the pilot to be able to rest and be with his family when not spraying.

There are few places in the world where ag-aviation has the luxury of flying over large fields of a single customer like SLC. The size of the fields and the low application rates make the Ipanema a viable ag-plane choice. Along with the division of acres into six locations and the need for at least two, sometimes three aircraft, to be available at each location, the Ipanema perfectly fits the business model of AeroSafra.

Q&A by Fred Ramirez I attend several ag-pilot trade shows a year. I have found at each one there was at least one session with a topic related to “Pilot Safety”. Curious about this, I searched for the key words “Aerial Accident” on the Internet. I found many sad stories about fatal and near-fatal accidents caused by hitting obstacles. I remember reading in AgAir Update a list of aerial accidents in 2010, I had met some of these pilots that I considered friends, as well as customers. The bottom line is they are someone’s father, brother, son, husband and/or grandfather. It was disturbing to learn about their accidents. The common denominator in

question and answer

Obstacle warning the equation is many of the accidents were caused by hitting obstacles. Can these accidents be avoided? If yes, how? If you use a Guia system, you will see a feature called Obstacle Points. An obstacle means any object that might be encountered by pilots who fly very low to the ground. Obstacles can be trees, test poles, MET towers, wind turbines, power lines or any object that may pose a hazard for aerial spraying. Unfortunately, not all obstacles are marked or lit to make them visible. Marked or unmarked, they may be difficult to see depending on the level of ambient light and the direction of approach. In general, they are a big risk for ag-pilots.

It’s Practically

one world

Accidents usually happen because obstacles have not been identified. In other words, the pilot doesn’t know an obstacle is present, doesn’t see the obstacle for some reason, or recognizes the obstacle too late to have enough time or distance to avoid hitting the obstacle. If the pilot is aware of an obstacle and alerted well ahead of time, he should be able to avoid it. The key is awareness. For years, the goal of AG-NAV Inc. has been to improve this awareness with its Obstacle Points feature in its guidance products. Before 1995, obstacles in the AgNav system were called Pick-Up Points (PUPs). They served as locations where ground crews were dropped off by

helicopters to work in the woods or mining fields. When dropping off people, the pilot pushed a function key to mark the location. Later, the pilot flew back to the PUPs to pick up the people. In 1995, while working with the Lee County (Florida) Mosquito Control District, pilots and the staff of LCMCD used PUPs for a different purpose. They marked the towers of a whole county with PUPs so that pilots could always see on the AgNav screen where the obstacles were, no matter day or night, sunshine or cloudy. To make it more meaningful, they changed the term Pick-Up Points to Tower Points. When AG-NAV introduced its color display in 2001,

they asked us to show the towers in colors depending on tower heights. Other pilots used the Tower Points feature to mark power lines or any object they wanted to see during flight. For this reason, Tower Points was changed to Obstacle Points. The Obstacle Points display feature in the AgNav system is used by many pilots because it is convenient and helpful. Before starting a new aerial spraying job, the pilot flies high around the spray areas. When an obstacle is found, he pushes a key to mark it. The marked point is immediately shown on the screen as a tower and saved to a file for future use. The file can be shared by anyone using the AgNav or Guia system. If the pilot does not have time to mark obstacles before the job, he can do it at any time during the job. (see chart one) The AgNav system not only displays the obstacles, but also checks what is

the closest obstacle that the aircraft is approaching. When the distance between aircraft and obstacle is within alerting range, the AgNav unit will give a vigorous warning to pilot on the light bar and screen to catch his attention. While working for AG-NAV, I have found that my job is never finished because we always want to take on the challenges of new technologies and improve our products. By using new technologies, we design new products. By listening to pilots and operators for feedback, we improve our products. For example, during the NAAA show in 2009, one pilot asked me if he could download all towers or obstacles already identified by the FAA and install them into the AgNav system. I asked him for a sample file. None are available he said. My answer to his question was “No, but it can be done”. Upon return to my office, I searched

the Internet for the term “FAA Digital Obstacle”. I found a web site where I could download a file for all the information needed. After two weeks implementing the code to support the FAA Obstacle files, I sent the new software to Gene Sutton, chief pilot of LCMCD, to test the new feature. The next day he called asking how I did it. He could see all the towers in Florida and verify that all obstacles were correct. With the new feature, he could see the name and height of each obstacle. (see chart two) The FAA has obstacle files for all states in the USA, a file for Canada and a file for Mexico. You can download the latest files from: http://aeronav.faa.gov/index. asp?xml=aeronav/applications/digital/ dof The download from the Internet is a zip file, for example DOF-1211020.zip. You unzip it to get obstacle Dat files. Then copy the *.Dat files to the Guia

system. When working in a new state or county, simply select the correct Dat file before selecting an area to fly. You will get all identified obstacles around the spray areas. Also, your previous obstacles are loaded by default. With AgNav GPS units, pilots should be able to enhance their safety with a few simply steps that mark obstacles in their flight path with an alert from the unit. Even though FAA records new towers and obstacles and updates its files a few times a year, a new tower may be built at any time and not be recorded. You should always check the working area before starting an aerial spray job.
