October 5: Victoria Lyras
Join us on October 5 to hear from Victoria Lyras the Founding Artistic Director of the Indianapolis Ballet, Inc.
A native of Athens, Greece, Ms. Lyras received her training at the New York City Ballet’s, School of American Ballet. While studying at the School of American Ballet from 1967-1976, she performed numerous roles with New York City Ballet.
At age 17, she was selected for the Pennsylvania Ballet where she rose through the ranks to soloist and principal roles. During her career, she toured and performed as a freelance guest artist and master teacher throughout the United States.
In 1996, she joined the professional staff of Sky Rink at Chelsea Piers in New York City where she directed the ballet program exclusively created for figure skaters. She later founded “Lyrical Designs,” her first business that designs and executes competitive skating dresses, tutus, ballet costumes and headpieces.
Ms. Lyras started the Indianapolis School of Ballet in August 2006 one year after Indy’s professional company declared bankruptcy. Ms. Lyras started the school with a dream to one day restore professional ballet to the Indianapolis community. A dream that became a goal and then a reality when in 2018 Indianapolis Ballet premiered its first professional season with dancers home grown and from around the country. Indianapolis Ballet joins the ranks of the Indiana Repertory Theatre and the Indianapolis Symphony Orchestra supporting professional artists who earn their living through their art, and add greatly to the quality of life in Indianapolis.
Join us as we uncover the building of this remarkable business “from below the ground up.”
