Director Prasanth Varma is back on the big screen with his latest offering, Hanu Man, a sci-fi, fantasy film starring Teja Sajja in the lead role. In times when some parts of the audience is open about their sensitivity to religious references in films, the director says he is always cautious with his films but also clarifies that Hanu Man is just a superhero film and should be enjoyed like that.

The film’s trailer starts with the line, “Inspired from the itihasas of Akhand Bharat”, and goes on to show how Teja dives into the ocean and approaches a mystical-looking, glowing pearl. The film shows god Hanuman’s blessings upon Teja, who gets almighty’s superpowers to fight evil.

In an interview with indianexpress.com, when asked if he was conscious about writing and directing the film in way that wouldn’t offend any viewer, Prasanth said, “I will never make films with the thought of just making money. So the intention is always right — to make a genuine and original film. Not just because I am touching on a religious topic but I am always cautious that my films won’t hurt anyone.”

The filmmaker adds, “At the same time, this film is not a religious film or a propaganda film. It’s a superhero film — an entertaining film in which we will not say that this religion is better or that religion is better. Our attempt is to make the younger generation aware about Hanuman. The film will release in India, Korea and Japan.

Festive offer

Prasath reveals that distributors in Japan and Korea approached them after watching the teaser.

“Initially, we just wanted to stick to Telugu language but people wanted to take it to Hindi, Tamil, Kannada and Malayalam audience after watching the film. So everything was very organic. We didn’t plan anything. Similarly, with Japan and Korea, the distributors there saw the teaser and approached us. It was a pleasant surprise for us to know that there are Hanuman bhakts there. We didn’t plan anything, everything is just happening with some divine intervention,” said the director.

As a director and writer, Prasanth is known for sci-fi elements in his films. His earlier works include movies like Awe, Kalki, Zombie Reddy and Adbhutham. In Hanu Man as well, he has shows a healthy balance of science and fantasy.

“I like fantasy and sci-fi, and the genre where I can combine both excites me. This film is not about which one is better. This is not a war between God and science. There are two characters which have two different perspectives about being a superhero and it involves magic, fantasy and it also involves current day technology,” concluded the director.

Hanu Man is slated to release on January 12 in Telugu, Hindi, Tamil, Kannada and Malayalam.
