Dia Mirza has been in the entertainment business for over 20 years now. In a recent interview, the actor spoke about the time when she won the Miss Asia-Pacific pageant back in the year 2000. Dia shared that she never allowed anyone to “commodify or objectify” her and went against the grain when she chose to wear a one-piece swimsuit in the international pageant, which was an unpopular choice. Women participating in international beauty pageants were expected to wear two-piece swimsuits in the swimwear round.

Dia, in a chat with BBC Hindi, said, “When I participated in the international pageant, I was very uncomfortable wearing a two-piece swimsuit so I wore a one-piece swimsuit. No one before my year, or even after it had done this. It depends on your individual choice. No one can force you to do anything that makes you uncomfortable.”

Dia Mirza said that one should not do anything that makes them uncomfortable but added that if they are body confident and comfortable wearing swimwear, then they should do it. “If you feel like you are being objectified, then you should absolutely not do it. But if you are body confident and if you are comfortable in swimwear and if you don’t feel like someone is objectifying you, then you can do it,” she said.

Dia said that she has remained true to her priniciples for 20 years now and added, “I never let anyone commodify or objectify me. You have seen me for 20 years now, and you have seen how I have made choices in the same direction. Lara and Priyanka were also with me, and all of us have done the same thing.”

Recently, Sushmita Sen had spoken about how her father was really upset with her when she wore a swimsuit during Miss India in 1994. “I remember having this very emotional moment with my father when I promised him. I said, ‘Baba, I have to wear a swimsuit, it is a part of the show. I cannot not wear it but I promise you I will add respect to it. It won’t be crass.’ He was not very happy with that, but when I won Miss India and I told my father that I will represent my country, that, for my father, being a defence person, was very emotional,” she shared with Mid-day.
