The finger bowl that you get after finishing up your main course is something that goes unnoticeable yet it is an integral part of many Indian dining scenes. 1. A finger bowl is a half water-filled bowl that contains hot water and a few slices of lemon. It is traditionally served after the main course and before the dessert and served on a small plate with a doily (just like a saucer). Indians mostly use their hands instead of silverware to eat food. As such, in order to clean their hands quickly, a finger bowl is used.

2. The reason why lemon is added into the bowl is because of its anti-bacterial quality. It acts as a natural antiseptic and removes any unwanted smell from your fingers.

3. The quintessential way of using a finger bowl is by dipping your fingertips (not the entire finger) into it. While Indians are used to squeezing the lemon, traditionally it's not expected to be done.

4. After you're done clearing away the little food grease, the next step is to wipe the excess water on your fingers using a napkin. After that, place the finger bowl along with the doily to the left and above the saucer. The saucer is then used to have the dessert.
