HET BLAUWE HART / THE BLUE HEART

The striking artwork in the centre of Delft, right next to the majestic Nieuwe Kerk, is this blue heart entitled The Blue Heart or “Het Blauwe Hart” for obvious reason.

Designed by Marcel Smink and installed in 1998, it consists of blue glass panels on a stainless steel frame.

The artist is associating the technically-constructed heart to Delft’s local Technical University while the blue color of the glass refers to the world-famous “Delfts Blauw” or the Delft Blue earthenware and the heart itself stands for “the heart of the city”.

The Blue Heart was commissioned by the municipality of Delft to embellish the turning loop for buses on the circular road of Oude Langendijk. It is approximately 250cm x 350cm x 300cm in size.
