"Lifeblood" has echoes of Maria Schneider's earlier works in a chart that's approachable by more bands than many of her great charts (i.e. no woodwind doubles, modest brass ranges).

This work has rich, dense harmonies; lyrical melodies over top of a brisk, moving rhythm section; and modal solo changes for your tenor and trombone improvisers. "Lifeblood" works great mid-set, and also makes an unusual–but effective–opener.

Many thanks to Chris Merz and his always-superb University of Northern Iowa Jazz Band I for their stellar recording heard above. It's from their 2012 CD The Hard Way.
