As a consequence is negative. As a result can be both positive and negative.
He didn't do well in the exams as a consequence of skipping lectures.
He did/didn't do well in the exams as a result of attending/skipping lectures.

'as a consequence' sounds like the outcome was negative. Its sounds more formal and I would tend to write this only, or say it to emphasise the negative outcome.
'as a result' could be a negative or positive outcome. Again, it's a little formal sounding. I would usually write it or say it to emphsise my point.
'so' can be used in all situations, and unless the pronunciation is emphasised (by drawing out the 'o' sound) then I would use this form in speech most often.
