There is no difference between "pace up and down" and "pace back and forth" because they both talk about walking. But "go back and forth" can mean walking or any other method of motion. "He went back and forth, walking across the waiting room many times", "He went back and forth in his car between his home and his business", "He went back and forth swimming between the island and the shore", "He went back and forth on his horse between the campsite and the ranch".
