What is the Approach Angle, Departure Angle and Breakover Angle

Approach angle, departure angle, and breakover angle are important measurements of a vehicle's off-road capability.

  1. Approach Angle: The approach angle is the maximum angle at which a vehicle can approach an obstacle without making contact with the front of the vehicle. It is the angle between the ground and the line that intersects the front tire and the center of the vehicle. A larger approach angle allows the vehicle to climb over obstacles more easily.
  2. Departure Angle: The departure angle is the maximum angle at which a vehicle can depart an obstacle without making contact with the rear of the vehicle. It is the angle between the ground and the line that intersects the rear tire and the center of the vehicle. A larger departure angle allows the vehicle to descend from obstacles more easily.
  3. Breakover Angle: The breakover angle is the maximum angle at which a vehicle can pass over an obstacle without the center of the vehicle making contact. It is the angle between the ground and the line that intersects the lowest point of the vehicle and the front and rear tire centers. A larger breakover angle allows the vehicle to clear obstacles more easily.
These angles are important for off-roading and are used to determine a vehicle's capabilities in navigating obstacles and rough terrain. A vehicle with larger approach, departure, and breakover angles is typically better equipped for off-roading and can handle more challenging terrain.
