Latest purchase?
RE: Latest purchase?
I recently acquired a new-old-stock Sun Type 6 keyboard & mouse set with the proprietary DIN interface.  (The Type 6 was also available in USB.)  I already have older Type 4 and 5 sets (which were only ever available with the proprietary interface) and a Type 7 (which was USB-only).  All, including the new Type 6, are the UNIX layout with Caps-Lock and CTRL keys reversed (among other changes).  I've seen used, bare Type 6 keyboards in less-than-stellar condition with asking prices the same or higher than my NOS set.

It included all the accessories:  a keyboard wrist rest, two CDs, a Sun power cord, a mouse pad, and even the 25-pin serial port breakout cable.  I've been looking for one of those for years for my SparcStation 20s.  I don't actually need dual serial ports on any of them, and it's straightforward to wire your own (if I'd ever gotten around to it), but I'm quite happy to have that little trinket added to my collection.

It's little stuff, but I'm oddly excited by it all!

Hi jpstewart,

its the small bits that are often the hardest to find, as they just get put in the bin.

I have some of the little ribbon cables used to connect the Octane MXE to Digital Video / Personal Video , which I have kept for yes, just in case I need them.

I doubt I will ever find these on ebay.

Cheers,

Editor keyboard for Discreet Logic. Technically, it's the same crappy Darfon 6511-BN keyboard you got with later IRIX workstations, but with shortcut keys for Discreet Logic applications.

No idea who made it -- probably not SGI, maybe Autodesk (there's a Discreet logo after all). There's some light wear on the keys, but I don't use Discreet on a daily basis so I don't care.

My latest purchase is this Octane2 with a suspected failed power supply: (Yet another concurrent project, but I couldn't help myself!)

It has the following specs: Single R12K@400MHZ, 1GB RAM and V12 Graphics.

It's currently not working, so hopefully I can get it up and running as easily as possible!

Blackmagic Davinci Resolve Speed Editor. Actually, I got the combo deal of a lifetime Davinci Resolve Studio license (dongle) plus the Speed Editor. I may have some Discreet options available on IRIX, but for most of my editing I prefer Resolve. And I can really do without the noise of FC disk arrays.

I intend to use my HP Z600 for Resolve rather than my MBP (more CPU power, big screens) but I need to get a half-decent GPU with at least 4GB of VRAM (preferably 8GB) first. And to buy a GPU in 2021 is ... difficult. Heck, even an old GTX 1070 sells 2nd hand for nearly what it cost new in 2016  Angry

Thanks for showing this @jan-jaap! I just downloaded DaVinci Resolve from the App Store and it seems to run pretty well on my Mac Pro on a 4K screen!

IIRC there are some limitations in the app store version. I'd stick with the direct download from blackmagicdesign.com.

I originally got started with Resolve because I had some Blackmagic hardware: some SDI<->HDMI converters, a master clock, and an SDI in/out for the Macbook (Blackmagic Recorder & Monitor). I use them to connect the Discreet hardware to the 'real world' because I don't want to have to deal with SDI tape decks and broadcast monitors. Blackmagic offers Resolve at a low/zero price point because they hope to sell you their hardware (which is also pretty good value).
