Over the course of the years, Willy Wonka has been portrayed by many in multiple films. In 1971, Gene Wilder portrayed the character. Wilder’s portrayal was greatly loved and considered to be the greatest role of his career. In an interview in 2010 with Robert Osborne, Wilder, on being asked about the Johnny Depp remake of the film by director Tim Burton, said,

“Oh, I think it’s an insult; and it’s probably one of others insult, I think. I like Warner Brothers for other reasons, but to do that with Johnny Depp who I think is a good actor, and I like him; but I don’t care for that director, and he’s a talented man, but I don’t care for him for doing stuff like he did.”
