In Slovenia, an ERDF-funded project is providing novel forms of elderly care to help, support and train their families both in gerontology centres and at home.

The aim of the centre – which encompasses the entire ageing process, including social, psychological and biological aspects – is to reduce the need for institutional care as the population ages and pressures on nursing homes grow.

The ERDF-funded centre, located in Koper, Slovenia, will be dedicated to local elderly citizens as well as their families in a bid to further reduce the need for institutional care. It will offer tailored support to people with dementia as well as professional help and support for their families.

Staff will create programmes and organise workshops to educate families on how to take care of older relatives who are ill, including how to talk to a person with dementia or how to provide help during palliative care. Since relatives of those suffering from dementia often experience serious distress themselves, they are often already in contact with health visitors and social services.

The project will aim to respond to what is both a need and opportunity to improve care for the elderly at home by incorporating their families and relatives into the care-giving process.
