Lorraine said: “This was a fantastic achievement by both of them, and as both lads play for the Lowca club, it was also a double celebration for them.
“These awards were won out of 525 players who took part in the League in the 2023 season.”
In the Holmen Iggesund Premier Division the tightest game was at Silloth where Aspatria beat previously unbeaten Glasson Rangers 34-32. Always a tight affair it had been 22-22 at half-time.
The Aspatria tries were scored by Mark Irwin (2), man of the match Jordan Moore (2), Owen Thorndyke and Stuart Creighton. Ex-Ince Rose Bridge half-back Ben Tootill kicked four goals and Irwin landed one.
For Glasson there were tries for Luke Jackson, Matt Burns, man of the match Ben Humm, John Dollochin, Carl Barcock and Scott Burns. Tyler Beales kicked four goals.
Aspatria’s Mark Ridley said: “I was especially pleased for our young players, particularly Jordan Moore and Owen Thorndyke who both scored. Jordan was our man of the match with a brace and he went 70 metres for one of them weaving his way past two or three players.
“There should be a special mention for young Jack Wilson who moved from hooker to prop and had his best game in a Hornets shirt.
“It was pleasing to get a win over an experienced Glasson side and their coach Scott Burns was right in predicting two of our players who were with them last season Guy Reed and Scott Donald had really big games.”
Scott Burns, Glasson head coach said: “I just thought that Aspatria had our number really, particularly in the second-half. They used their man of the match Jordan Moore differently and he played really well.
“It was as expected, the former Glasson players for Hornets played well and credit to Aspatria for how they performed. We had gone short of experienced players but that’s not an excuse.
“I didn’t think there would be as many points scored, however, and out defence wasn’t as good as it has been
“Overall it was a hard game, though, and there will be a few sore bodies today.”
There were plenty of points at Distington where the home side’s A team beat Cockermouth 52-30, pulling away after leading narrowly 16-12 at the break.
The Distington tries came from Jack Speight (3), Jamie Friel (2), man of the match Callum Fox (2), Greg Bedford and Bailey Worthington. Fox landed seven goals and Speight put over one.
For Cockermouth there were tries from man of the match Seamus Hutton (2), Kieran Barr, Regan Tinnion and Danny Price. Tinnion (4) and Hutton (1) kicked the goals.
Liam McAvoy, the Cockermouth coach said: “It was disappointing after a really good start when we scored first and we were very much in at half-time.
“We just fell to pieces in the second-half. Conceding nearly fifty points was not good enough and we looked like a team who hadn’t trained together.
“However there were some positives – the players gave plenty of effort and they didn’t stop trying. It was also good to get some of our rugby union players back.
“Regan never stopped taking us round the pitch and it was great to have Seamus Hutton back as he is a really athletic player.”
Kells A were two powerful for Ellenborough A running out 48-4 winners after leading 24-0 at half-time.
Keiran Halcrow (3), Ashton Sice, Jamie Jennings, Acben Pervizaj, Jack Ainley and Keiran Fleming scored the Kells tries with eight goals from Ross Gainford and a man of the match performance by Nathan Clark.
Ellenborough’s try came from Riley Burr with a man of the match performance by Gary Tierney. It didn’t help their cause that they had Josh Patterson sin-binned.
Kells coach Jonathan Wignall said: “We asked for enthusiasm and the team delivered, I was really pleased with how we stuck to the game plan in the first-half and the impact the substitutes made was particularly satisfying.
“Our forward laid a platform and we reaped the rewards later on in each half.
“We were good in patches in the second-half but there are aspects to work on in the coming weeks. Our defence was outstanding which was a significant positive.
“Fitness, too, was a fantastic positive and the lads should be proud of how they’ve applied themselves throughout the off-season with special thanks to coach Bradley Smith for his attention to detail in relation to fitness.
“We had some excellent individual performances and Nathan Clarke deserved his man of the match accolade while 16-year-old prop Arben Pervisaj was outstanding on his home open age debut.”
For Ellenborough their game day manager Robbie Thompson added: “We had a bit of a mixed side out with a lot of lads having other commitments for Easter. We had to use players in unfamiliar positions but I thought the lads stuck at it.
“The first 20 minutes of each half were virtually 0-0 but Kells have a good mix of youth and experience and they scored some very good tries.
“We didn’t enter any Cup competitions this season as we wanted to concentrate on getting teams out for League matches. It means we haven’t a game until April 27 but I hope we can find a couple of fixtures before then just to keep the intensity going.”
In the derby clash Maryport beat Flimby 54-6 but at half–time it was still anybody’s game at 14-6.
Maryport powered away to win with tries from man of the match Blake Miller (3), Joel Baker (2), Sam Forrester, Luke Baker, Carl Steele, Chris Ivison and Shane Williams. Miller converted six and Craig Foster landed one.
The Flimby try was scored by Nathan Kirkbride with the conversion from Dan Weir. Their man of the match was Rhys Booty.
Flimby’s Ricky Morrison said: “Maryport were a very well-drilled side but at half-time it was still close.
“Then Maryport showed how much experience they had in the last 15 minutes and scored two tries from Sam Forrester and Blake Miller linking together brilliantly.
“It was a valiant effort from our lads and I was happy with the way they played. They are young lads who all dug deep and played well.”
