The star of this refreshing and vibrant bowl is the açaí berry, a small, round fruit native to the Amazon rainforest. When picked from the palm on which it grows, the fruit is bitter with hints of chocolate, and slightly tangy; by the time the berries reach supermarkets (açaí is widely available nowadays), they have been pitted and turned into a frozen purée. Simply thaw the packets for a couple minutes and combine with milk and a handful of other frozen fruits in a high-powered blender for a quick breakfast or dessert. Be mindful not to thin it out too much — the consistency should be thicker than a smoothie so you can eat it with a spoon. Top açaí bowls as you like, with a variety of fruits, nuts, granola and honey.

Preparation

  1. Step 1

Slightly thaw the frozen açaí packets at room temperature for 2 minutes, then break them into pieces in the packet by hand or with a rolling pin.

  2. Step 2

To a blender, add milk, açaí, banana slices and frozen fruit. Blend until thick and smooth. If you have one, use a blender tamper to incorporate the frozen fruits, or scrape down the sides with a spatula. Add more liquid, 1 tablespoon at a time, if necessary, until it reaches the desired consistency. Be mindful not to thin out the mixture too much since it will be eaten with a spoon.

  3. Step 3

Transfer the açaí mixture to a bowl, add toppings of your choice and serve immediately.

I’m concerned about the general environmental use of açaí berries. Like so many other precious items being sourced from the rain forest and other far away tropical farming areas. Açaí berry farming are reducing the diversity of the rain forest. (Radically changing that environment. What about substituting other local sourced super foods .Such as Aronia berries, sea berries. I have been taking acai for a year now to help tame my arthritis. I am not a Dr. and do not claim to have the answer, but this has helped me tremendously! I swear by it, and like Madeline's comment, am just waiting on a food processor from Santa, to help speed up the blending of frozen fruit. To thicken my acai bowl, I add banana and a little oatmeal. I also put on a dollop of peanut butter on the top. It's a wonder food!

Rather than a blender, I have found a food processor, gives a better, more ice cream like texture.

Well I’m happy to use this acacia berry in my fruit bowl. Environmental messages can be annoying on a recipe app.

I made this and it was delicious.

Rainforest fruit? Just what we should not promote.

I lived in Brazil for five years and made açaí every day for breakfast. Some tips: 1) before beginning, place your bowl in the freezer so the açaí does not melt as fast when you are eating it; 2) use unsweetened açaí and, for every two blocks of açaí puree, use one tablespoon of guaraná syrup (another superfood and natural sweetener); 3) always use a frozen banana and one other frozen fruit like strawberries or pineapple (mango tends to be too sour); 4) topping with peanut butter is sacrilege.

Any frozen berry can be blended, perhaps with a sweetener, to make "faux acai".

Apple juice pairs much better with açaí than orange juice or milk.

Delicious!!!!!!!!!

I tried using both OJ and coconut milk. While both were good, the flavor of the OJ was a bit overpowering.

First attempt was too liquidy. Try using a frozen banana and don’t leave the açaí out so long

I followed this exactly, but I don’t have a blender, so I used my immersion blender. Disaster! After just two or three pulses—on the lowest speed—it was liquid. Maybe leave out the liquid?

I would add a good dollop of peanut butter for protein.

This is my go to breakfast with homemade gluten-free granola and peanut butter or almond butter on top with more berries! Blendec has a blender attachment that allows you to swirl everything around as it chops up the acai and makes it a breeze. no brand matches Acai Roots in taste!

This was pretty good - definitely made a nice base for the strawberries, blueberries, bananas, granola, honey and peanut butter we added on top. We thought that the milk might have muted the tartness of the fruits so we plan to try making the base with a combination of OJ and Greek yogurt.
