Holding arms behind, shoulders held back.

I have posted about this before but still wondering as it comes and goes. Baby holds her arms out and back a lot of the time almost like a little ski jumper. She sort of puffs her chest out and holds her arms back. I’ve attached some photos for reference. She rolls over, pushes up, sits up etc and so I’m not overly concerned but just wonder if any other babies do this? Sometimes she looks like a little scarecrow with her arms in a t shape. She can relax them the other way but it’s her go to pose when being held.

  • Yes!! My son has his arms like this all the time. When you pick him up his arms are out wide. He sits in his wee chair like this too. I hadn't noticed till my mum picked up on it and now I'm worried cause she mentioned it alot. The health visitor didn't say much but will assess it next time she's out she said. It prevents him from rolling both ways easily. So he can roll back to belly no bother and has done this for ages now but getting on to his back is a struggle cause he puts his arms behind him and gets stuck. Eventually he moves it up and goes over (we have tried to teach him this lots) Have you found any reasoning for it? Xx

Good to know someone else has a similar thing going on. No reasoning as of yet, but I think part of it is habit and trying to get balance. I’ve read online about stiff muscles in babies so could be this too?!

  • Hi, we don’t have this but we have seen an osteopath for a different issue and since going to her his positioning generally when being held, sitting etc is a lot straighter. I think it’s about them learning to use their muscles in different ways. It might be worth speaking to an osteopath and they can let you know if it’s something they might be able to help with? I called ours before we had the appointment to check that they could help with our issue (head not turning fully on one side) and they discussed it with me for free before making an appointment. I doubt it is something to worry about, possibly just the most comfortable way of using the muscles at the moment but if you are concerned you could also maybe speak to the GP just to check if there’s anything that could help? X

Yes, I’d thought about osteopath. I saw a great lady when I was pregnant so know the wonders it can do! Thank you xxx
  • Might be worth seeing a good pediatric osteopath for an assessment.
  • My second did this, but actually more pronounced than your daughters. We saw an oestopath and it didn’t change anything. I can’t actually remember when it stopped, probably just when she spent less time in our arms. She’s still very flexible (loves putting her feet behind her head, chewing her toes etc), and has better posture than my oldest and all of her friends. Could be a bit of hypermobility? I’m hypermobile and it’s not caused me any worrying issues.

Thank you for your very reassuring comment. I’m hypermobile so I do wonder whether it’s that? Like you it causes me no problems apart from when I’m pregnant! Xx
  • My baby has just turned 6 months and my sister mentioned this to me today and I’m slightly worried, it’s quite pronounced now I’ve noticed it. I’m hoping it’s just her building her core muscles up. She can sit for small periods, but only if she’s put it that position. She also hasn’t rolled yet. She’s so so close but it’s like she doesn’t know what to do with her arms. Did anyone get any answers? I’m thinking I may bring this up with the GP or Health visitor

Hi - my daughter is now 15 months and the health visitor wasn’t concerned. She’s still very flexible, but we think she may be hyper mobile which is like me. It’s definitely improved as she’s got stronger x
