From the Louis A. Warren Lincoln Library and Museum FIGURE 1. The centennial celebration of Lincolns birth in 1909 helpedmake Lincolns image a powerful national symbol. By the time of WorldWar I, Lincolns face appeared frequently in war propaganda. In the sameera, Charnwoods Lincoln helped make him an international figure. Godfrey Rathbone Benson, Lord Charn-wood, was an unlikely Lincoln biographer. TheBritish upper classes were notoriously pro-Southern during the American Civil War, andhe was born in that station in life in 1864. Hedid well at Oxford University, where he waslater a tutor. He became a Member ofParliament and the Mayor of Lichfield. After his graduation from Oxford in 1887,Charnwood made a tour of the United States.He returned briefly—to Boston and NewYork—in 1894. In politics, he was a Liberal. Hewas obviously interested in the United States,and, as a boy, he had read Charles G. LelandsAbraham Lincoln, a book memorable enoughto be mentioned in the brief bibliograp
