Unformed

“Your eyes saw my unformed substance; in your book were written, every one of them, the days that were formed for me, when as yet there was none of them.”

Psalm 139:16

My siblings-in-law just had their first baby! The baby’s name is Isaiah and he was born the day we arrived in Florida for part of our Christmas break.
We are so excited for this new chapter and I’m happy to be an uncle (again!). Many friends have celebrated new sons and daughters added to their families, and others are expectant about future blessings the Lord will give through his gift of life.

All of us are here because of this unique gift. 9ish months before our birthday, our parent(s) received notification of our earth arrival. We all have a shared experience as a fetus, or baby, or infant. [Note: these words are not progressive in time. Infant (latin: unable to speak), Fetus (latin: child)]

In the midst of celebrations of new life, let us not forget the millions of children that are being murdered under the guise of personal choice and health services. There is no doubt that the “a” word has been controversial. No, not the scarlet letter, but it is written in red, stained with the blood of innocents.

Abortion is murder. No matter what has happened, there is no reason why we should dictate who should and should not live. A few verses prior to the verse highlighted above, the Psalmist declares “I am fearfully and wonderfully made.” (vs. 14)
This is true of every human life.
Humans are created imago dei — in the image of God (Gen. 1:27) Birth difficulties, developmental problems, and mental disorders are realities in this life. We live in a world broken by sin. Some problems occur in infants, others occur through age and degenerative issues. When do we realize that every life is precious to God and should be precious to us?

There are some grey areas to be addressed, such as assessing the health/life of the mother versus the life of the baby. However, these kind of “grey” issues are in the vast minority. Most abortions are committed because of finances, convenience, unintended pregnancies, “not the right time”, “Not enough resources”, “immoral circumstances”, etc. None of these outweigh the cry of a newborn and no right to choose should equal the right to kill.

Even before I took one breath, celebrated one birthday, ate one taco, or read one book. God had every day of my life written out. The same is true for you. How are you using your days? Life is fleeting, life is precious, life is a gift from our Creator. We must ensure that that same gift of life is available to everyone. Should we blast hatred at those committing abortions? No. Should we burn down Planned Parenthood buildings? No. Should we ignore the issues? No.
The answer is speaking truth in love; stand boldly for the right to live even for those who are at this moment, unformed.
