This Maserati Merak got away, but there are more like it here.

This 1980 Maserati Merak is one of approximately 1,000 examples of the SS variant manufactured between 1976 and 1982 and was built in October 1980 for the US market. Acquired by the seller eight years ago, the car is finished in black over a brown leather interior and is powered by a mid-mounted 3.0-liter V6 topped by triple Weber carburetors. Additional equipment includes a five-speed manual transaxle with a limited-slip differential as well as four-wheel independent suspension, Campagnolo alloy wheels, electrically actuated pop-up headlights, and power windows. This Merak SS is now offered with service invoices from current ownership and a clean New Jersey title.

The Merak was introduced at the 1972 Paris Motor Show as a lower-cost alternative to the contemporary Bora, with which it shared its styling from the doors forward. Bora designer Giorgetto Giugiaro of Italdesign also penned the Merak’s rear profile, which features a vertical rear window and a louvered horizontal engine cover flanked by flying buttresses. This example is finished in black, and closeups of the finish and trim are presented in the photo gallery below.

Campagnolo alloy wheels are mounted with Kuhmo Ecsta ASX tires showing 2009 and 2010 date codes, and a yellow-painted steel spare is housed rearward in the engine bay. US-market equipment includes rubber impact bumpers at front and rear, side markers, and electrical deployment of the pop-up headlights.

The cabin is trimmed in brown leather over 2+2 seating with matching trim over the door panels and dash fascia complemented by dark brown upholstery over the center console. Additional features include brown fabric upper dash trim, tan carpeting, trident-logo front floor mats with dark brown binding, a perforated and fluted headliner, power windows, and a Sony CD player.

The three-spoke steering wheel frames Veglia Borletti instrumentation including a 200-mph speedometer, a tachometer with a 6,500-rpm redline, and an oil pressure gauge. The five-digit odometer shows 57k miles. The center stack houses a clock and a quartet of gauges monitoring coolant temperature, fuel level, oil temperature, and voltage.

The 3.0-liter V6 features an aluminum block with a 90 ° angle between cylinder banks and aluminum cylinder heads with dual overhead camshafts on each bank. The SS variant’s powerplant was updated with 44mm Weber carburetors and a 9.0:1 compression ratio for a factory-estimated output of 220 horsepower at 6,500 rpm. A December 2021 service invoice notes leaking carburetors, which were rebuilt in January 2022. Additional work in 2022 included fluid changes and replacement of the spark plugs

Power is sent to the rear wheels via a Citroën five-speed manual transaxle with a limited-slip differential. Braking is handled by discs all around, while independent suspension comprises double wishbones, coil springs, telescopic shock absorbers, and anti-roll bars at each end.

The Carfax report shows no accidents and lists history in New York from an initial update in 2006.
