History

In 1842, Samuel Bangs, a publisher from Boston, Mass., founded the Galveston News in Galveston, Texas. After the Civil War, a Confederate colonel from North Carolina named Alfred Horatio Belo joined the Galveston News as Bangs' bookkeeper. In a short time, Belo became a full partner.[5] In 1885, when efforts to purchase the Dallas Herald proved unsuccessful, Belo sent George Bannerman Dealey north from Galveston to establish a sister publication. That paper was named The Dallas Morning News. The Dallas Morning News began publication on October 1, 1885. The Dallas Morning News and the Galveston News were the first two newspapers in the country to publish simultaneous editions.[5][6]

From its inception, The Dallas Morning News focused on state news and refrained from formal affiliation with any one political party. Beginning with an initial circulation of 5,000, the Morning News soon acquired the Herald and later leased a special train on the Texas and Pacific Railway to carry papers to Fort Worth. By 1887, the paper expanded its reach via a special train on the Houston and Texas Central to deliver papers to McKinney, Sherman, and Denison on the morning they were printed.[6] This was done, in part, to acquire share from the paper's most serious challenger, the far-off St. Louis Post-Dispatch, which had a greater circulation in Texas than any Texas newspaper at the time.[5]

By 1888, the Morning News was printing an eight to twelve page edition daily and sixteen pages on Sunday. Circulation reached 17,000 by 1895.[6] By 1906, The Dallas Morning News had a circulation of 38,000.[5] In 1914, an evening paper, the Dallas Journal, was launched; that paper was sold in 1938.[6] George Bannerman Dealey, who started the Morning News, served as the editor until 1920, when he became president of A.H. Belo Corporation.[7] By 1928, circulation of the Morning News reached 86,000 daily. The paper's circulation stood at 150,000 in 1950 and grew to 346,273 by 1968.[6]

The Dallas Morning News became the only daily paper in Dallas in December 1991, when the A.H. Belo Corporation purchased the Dallas Times Herald and subsequently shuttered that publication.[1] By 1994, circulation was 527,300. In 2001, James M. Moroney III, great-grandson of George B. Dealey, became publisher. The Morning News had a daily circulation of 525,532 in 2003.[6] A.H. Belo Corporation continues to own The Dallas Morning News today, publishing the paper under the umbrella of DMN Media.[3] As of February 2016, the paper circulates 405,349 copies, which makes The Dallas Morning News the largest newspaper by circulation in the state of Texas.[4]

Donald Trump

On September 6, 2016, the editorial board of The Dallas Morning News declined to endorse the 2016 Republican nominee, Donald Trump, in an editorial titled “Donald Trump is no Republican.” The editorial board stated, “We have no interest in a Republican nominee for whom all principles are negotiable, nor in a Republican Party that is willing to trade away principle for pursuit of electoral victory. Trump doesn't reflect Republican ideals of the past; we are certain he shouldn't reflect the GOP of the future. Donald Trump is not qualified to serve as president and does not deserve your vote.”[8]
