Anja Rubik by Camilla Akrans | Vogue Nippon Mar 2010

Anja Rubik by Camilla Akrans Vogue Nippon Mar 2010The world of fashion photography, like so much of the creative arts, has been dominated by men.

Consumed by the ‘virginal’ mood and beauty of Anja Rubik, photographed by Swedish photographer living in New York Camilla Akrans, for the March issue of Vogue Japan, it was a few moments before I said ‘woman photographer’.

Anja Rubik by Camilla Akrans Vogue Nippon Mar 2010There are many great male photographers of women in the world but I’m so struck by Terry Richardson’s lack of a lens connection with his subjects. The photography is about Terry. Thinking about the emotional poverty in his photographs has caused me to reflect on the question of whether women tend to be more empathetic behind the lens.

Camilla Akrans Vogue Nippon Mar 2010Camilla Akrans is a fashion photographer from Sweden currently it in New York. Akrans doesn’t come up with loads of info in a quick Google search. Like a new flirtation, I want to know more about this photographer, an artist has exquisitely captured femininity, beauty and the complexity of sensuality in these photos.

Camilla Akrans Vogue Nippon Mar 2010 For me, these photos of Anja Rubik by Camilla Akrans are ‘art’ and they are very different from Richardson’s lens. Anne
