AKEL grief at the passing away of comrade Nikos Petrou

Akel c.c. Press Office, 22nd December 2020, Nicosia

The Central Committee of AKEL expresses its deep sorrow for the passing away of comrade Nikos Petrou, who for decades was a leading militant of AKEL.

Nikos Petrou was born on August 31, 1952 in Famagusta. From a young age he was actively involved in the youth movement and in 1971, he became a member of AKEL. A man with strong social sensitivities, faithful to the struggle for a qualatively superior society without exploitation.

His thirst for learning leads him to study economics in Moscow where he develops intense student activity in the ranks of the Union of Cypriot Students of the Soviet Union (EKFSE).

Returning to Cyprus after completing his studies, comrade Nikos soon becomes a leading figure in the society of Limassol, winning the appreciation of all political spectrums and the common people.

He served as Secretary of AKEL Limassol District Organisation from 2003 until 2013, while he was also a member of the Political Bureau of the C.C. of AKEL. He joined the AKEL full-time Party mechanism in 1978 until his retirement in 2013. As a full-time militant of AKEL Limassol, he progressed through numerous party positions, initially serving as Secretary of the Limassol City Committee, later as the District Organizing Secretary and finally as the District Secretary of the Party in Limassol.

Nikos Petrou was a comrade with a rare ethos, ideologically committed, perfectly ideologically and politically trained, gentle and at the same time a fighter who connected his name with serving the people and selflessness that characterized him all through his life. He never stopped being interested and fighting for AKEL, its ideals and for the common good.

The Central Committee of AKEL expresses its sincere condolences to his wife Elli, his daughter Ioanna, his son Giorgos and the rest of the family.

The funeral of our beloved comrade Nikos Petrou will be held on Wednesday, December 23, 2020 at the Church of Ayios Kosmas and Etolos in Ayios Athanasios, in Limassol at the expense of C.C. of AKEL.

Instead of wreaths, contributions will be made for the People’s Social Solidarity Network of Limassol and PASYKAF.

In consultation with the District Committee of AKEL Limassol, the Central Secretariat of AKEL decided to:

  • Postpone all scheduled Party events in the Limassol District for a period of eight days.
  • Party flags to remain at half-mast for 40 days.
  • The photo of the deceased was posted at the offices of the District Committee of AKEL Limassol.
