Conservation of the Salk Institute for Biological Studies

  • Handlery Hotel and Resort 950 Hotel Circle North San Diego, CA, 92108 United States (map)

The Louis Kahn-designed Salk Institute for Biological Studies (1965) overlooking the Pacific Ocean on the Torrey Pines Mesa near La Jolla, is considered among San Diego’s, and the country’s, finest modernist buildings. The exterior concrete and teak elements suffered degradation after 55 years of exposure to the elements.

This presentation, led by  Ann Harrer, P.E. – Associate Principal & Michelle Sandoval, LEED AP – Senior Associate & Architect with Wiss, Janney, Elstner Associates (WJE) of Chicago ,will describe the Salk Institute’s conservation-based approach to the recently completed teak window restoration and the ongoing concrete restoration project.

This program is offered by CSI San Diego.
