Before we even approach the wonders of the plant family Rosaceae and its unexpected members (from apples and blackberries to geums and Alchemilla mollis), I’d like to take a moment to celebrate roses that don’t look typically, well...rosey. These tend to be the single flowered varieties, of which the wild, or dog rose Rosa canina is a prime example, but it’s the blue-leaved, red-stemmed Rosa glauca that’s really charmed me these past few weeks. Its habit is often graciously described as ‘arching’ – in reality, it’s a tad unruly, though pleasingly upright and requiring no support – and if a sometimes a little lanky this is nothing when set against the value of those flowers and that foliage.
