Camera angles are just as important as anything in the documentary. to make it successful you need to have the right shots in place, with the right angle to really portray what you want to get across to the audience watching your piece.
All these different shots that can be seen here give off a completely different message to the others. for example, a worms eye view of someone, could mean that everything under this person in inferior, meaning he is superior to everything else in the shot/scene. where as an extreme close can be used to really show the emotions and character is going through, by only using a tiny proportion of their face. This is very well demonstrated int he new john Lewis Christmas advert.
Here we can see the man on the moons eye looking though a telescope. we can also see a tear coming from his eye int he corner of the shot. obviously this is an extreme close up as we can only see his eye and a tiny bit of skin around this. through the whole advert, we clearly know the man is happy, but this shot cements this as we see just how happy the man is through the use of his emotions, and how the camera has zoomed so far in on this to portray just how happy he is. |
Also, the shot choices you use in a documentary are very important to portraying the narrative of your documentary. In documentary, every shot needs to be relevant to the cause of the documentary, and try to portray the narrative structure to the audiences. if the shots in the film do not do this, then the documentary could become boring, and therefore be unsuccessful in portraying the narrative. this would be a disaster for the film producers as the documentary would be a complete fail.
so the choice of shot used in the whole documentary has to be very carefully planned out. Every little detail to the background of an interview and the footage used in the cut scenes needs to be thought out so that it can all portray the narrative of the documentary as best as possible.
