No matter how hard I try.
I can't see anything within any of the images.

Get cockeyed drunk? That's pretty much how it's done.
You look through the image further. Look over your computer screen far in the distance, then lower your vision to your screen
but don't let your vision to adapt on the screen.
If you can look inward oriented to create a double image you should be able to see them.
I still have Corel Photo-Paint 7 installed on Windows, it includes a stereograph filter called "3D stereo noise".
It does not use any pattern, you just run the filter on image that has high contrast and the result is 3D image hidden in noise texture.
The difference is that you can't detect a visible pattern, like in the images made with magiceye and stereograph plugins.
It also creates 2 black dots on the lower edge, that you can use to focus your eyes correctly.

Stucco textures work well in my opinion. Doubled the result and used high pass sharpening.

The small whirl became the eye by accident. ;)

Nothing I do is going to make me see,
what I can't see.
I know that there is something there,
but try as I might.
I can't make out what it is I'm suppose to be seeing.

I can just make out the dragon, but cannot seem to figure out the other one, Nidhogg (though I do believe it's a fish based on the tail end). Regardless, this program's output appears far superior than what the magiceye program can create. Makes me jealous. :)

Cool! I liked the brown sandy version of the dragon best. The fish gave me a hard time - I focused mechanically on the whirl :rofl I had to go to the dragon again and keep the adjustments.

I couldn't see them yesterday as well, although I know that I usually can. I need to be relaxed, and further away from the PC as usual. And I must not try - that is too much of will :)

I need to look for Magiceye :hehe

If I put too much will (or is it desire?) into something which works more via subconsciousness, I am not relaxed enough that it works indeed. I really need to kind of float(?) in order to see the pictures behind the obvious.

Magickeye was the plugin to generate those pics, wasn't it?

Thank you Wallace. If I don't find the program Stereograph (seems to be dissapeared) I'll see if I can get this one to run on linux, or find the source code.

For Windows?
You can find it....Attached version 1.5 for you. It works from Gimp 2.2 to 2.10.
But, like I mentioned the sliders are invisible if you are using dark theme on 2.10.
This happens with some other old plugins too, don't know why.

How does it work?
Open the depth map image. Let's say it's 640x640 pixels.
Create new image: height 640, width 64 pixels. Fill it with pattern, seamless patterns work best.
Switch back to the depth map image. FIlters/Map/Stereograph.
Make sure you have correct texture loaded, and tweak your settings.

Unlike with Magiceye plugin, you don't need to convert the depthmap image to greyscale mode.

You could first try the butterflies image on the bottom of page, it's made to be easier for the eyes.

Yay paper....no it's stone dinosaur. Nice one Lylejk.
Don't know if you're familiar with one program I found earlier today, OpenStereogram.
It's java based and has also noise (dotted) option along with other options, 20 depth maps and some textures.

First kind a usable result with openstereogram; I couldn't deal with the built-in text feature so I made the bumpmap with GIMP, also the pattern :)

I am not quite happy yet - is there a way to reduce the mess on the right side?

That's funny I tried fire texture earlier, and tiger fur. They didn't turn out so good.
It depends on the used texture and also the settings, try creating more complex seamless pattern.

I recommend to read through the wiki page I linked earlier.
